Meet Anna Bratton | Copywriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Bratton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
My brand focuses on authenticity. When I first decided to begin Anna Bratton Copywriter, I looked at a lot of other copywriters, and I thought I needed to mimic what they were doing to be successful. Talk about confusion and resistance! In reality, all I felt was fear, imposter syndrome, and an inability to start the dang thing.
In my personal life, authenticity is key. I try to never sacrifice it. And if I do, my inner self knows and reminds me to show up authentically. Why would it be different with my business? So, I have spent the last months getting clear on what showing up as an authentic business owner looks like for me. It has clarified my brand, brand voice, product offers, and my ideal client. I think that when we build our businesses (and lives) around our authentic and true selves, our endeavors are more enjoyable and successful. When we try to be something that we are not, we certainly will not enjoy it. We can only fake it for so long, and who we are will eventually come through because it is what’s most natural. I am finding each and every day that I love my business more and more when I connect with clients that have similar values and passion. It takes it from a contract to an exciting collaboration.
I realized that it is okay to know what others are doing, seek advice, and continue learning and growing, but that is different from impersonating. Impersonation leads to comparison but not growth. Instead, I have focused on using what I learn from people I respect, and I make notes about how I could use it, how that can impact my writing style or my client’s brand voice. It still takes a lot of conscious effort, but that is okay because I know my final product in the world represents me as a professional exactly the way I want it to.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a copywriter, I am a done for you service provider. In simple terms, businesses hire me as a freelancer to write any copy digital or printed for their company.
I love to say I am a teacher that turned into a copywriter. As a young girl, I wanted to be a journalist. You could find my things I wrote all over our house. I was too afraid to pursue it though. I never thought my writing would develop strong enough to be hired. Instead, I chose to be a literacy teacher. I love kids, helping people succeed, and a great passion for language and its impact.
Fast forward to 8 years of teaching and a maternity leave where I had time to slow down and think. I always tell my students that they can achieve their dreams or create them, use their voices to make change, and take risks. Why then was I not doing it myself? So, Anna Bratton Copywriting was born. I had been copywriting for awhile with my husband’s business without even knowing it. When I landed in the Comprehensive Copywriting Course to hone my skills, it sparked a creative outlet that I knew had to continue.
Watching my husband become a small business owner (music composer) I witnessed his fear of putting any type of writing out there for the world because he felt he was not strong at that. He would also look at “bigger” composers and feel intimidated by their websites and social media accounts. It was from that point on that I internalized my core business value that small businesses voices matter just as much (if not more) than large corporations. When I started copywriting, I really focused on making sure my clients have clear and consistent voices that follow a tone guide because I want them to feel confident with what we put out in their communities. I want to empower them, just as I wanted to empower students to use their voices.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As musicians, my husband and I love to go to the Fox Theater for musicals and for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
If that type of music isn’t your thing, though, I would take you to:
-Lunch at Ponce City Market, where we would eat and visit some of my favorite shops
-A walk around the Atlanta Botanical Gardens
-A drink at Orpheus Brewing to top it all off

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so fortunate with amazing people in my life, so this is difficult…I would have say John Bratton (my husband), Stephanie Granger (sister), and Rachel Bowers (friend). They never cease to amaze me with their unconditional support and love for me. Starting a business is probably the scariest thing I have done to date, and they always show up to support, give advice, be honest, and just listen.
