We had the good fortune of connecting with Nakeisa Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nakeisa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When it was time to me to start my business it came from a personal pain of my own. When I was in college I received news that was devastating. I just knew my life was over. I received the news that I was HIV positive. In the beginning of this. We journey I didn’t see any other women my age living with HIV. I thought my life was over. I soon realized this was simply not true. So I went through my journey of healing and then decided to share my story on YouTube. Then I wrote a book about my life. That was the seed that led me to starting my own organization to help women living with HIV.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is a not for profit organization where we provide holistic care services for women living with HIV aged 18-30. We understand that a diagnosed of HIV can be multifaceted and we want to ensure that the women are equipped to take care of every area of their lives.

This started as a support group and now we have done a few initiatives including self care boxes for women living with HIV in my area. It took a lot of work and strategy to get where we are today. The biggest challenge we have had is just making sure we are confidential in our practices to get women living with HIV involved. How we have overcame this is to be present and share but also have a myriad of protections for our clients. We have events that only the women know about and we protect our community at all cost.

I also have learned a lot of lessons on this journey. The biggest lesson I have learned is stewardship. I have learned that although I have help with my organization the vision was given to me by God. I have to always remember that and make sure that my organization is going in the direction of the vision that was planned.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was going on a week long outing in my city. I would get us a nice hotel in the downtown area so we could go to the top attractions from the aquarium and then do a history tour. We would go to the King Center as well. We would then cruise over to Atlantic Station to take nice pictures, shopping and get some Kilroy’s ice cream. We would spend our lunch time eating American Deli for some hot wings and Philly cheesesteaks. During our week we must visit the Marietta area to eat at Marietta Diner, Andretti’s, Cumberland Mall and Perimeter Mall. We also would have to make sure we go visit some of the nature trails and parks including Piedmont Park.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout Christi and the first youth council that 8 was apart of.As a child they taught me how to make workshops, and facilitate. They trained me to do the work that I currently do today. I didn’t know it would come full circle in this way but it did. Christi was the first one to really see the potential that was deep inside of e. There are so many people I could name and I’m so grateful for every one of them.
