We had the good fortune of connecting with samose mays and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi samose, how do you think about risk?
Taking risk have played a major role in my career. In 2009 I quit two jobs to go back to college full time to pursue my degree. I dropped out of college twice, so I risked losing my vehicle and apartment to realize the dream of being a college graduate. I eventually had 2 vehicles repossessed and ended up homeless during my journey to graduate. I took these risk and they paid off. In 2011 I completed a Bachelors degree, in 2013 I completed a Masters Degree, and in 2016 I completed a Doctorate.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the Parks and Recreation Director in Bryan County Georgia as well as a motivational speaker. I have also worked as a college professor. Having the background of a an educator, director, and speaker sets me apart from other professionals because I wear many hats. I love educating and working in the community parks and recreational setting each day. I travel the country presenting educational sessions and motivational speeches to individuals that want to be better professionals.

I am proud that I am able to take what I do as a leader and motivate others to be the best that they can each day. I am a two time college dropout that struggled for 10 years to find myself after I dropped out. I work various jobs during that 10 year period and once I got fed up, I reenrolled back in college and didn’t stop until I had my doctorate. My life story guides my presentations as I use my real life downfalls to uplift others. I overcame those challenges and downfalls by focusing on the end goal of obtaining my doctorate and provided a better life for my family.

A major lesson that I learned is that no matter how far you have gone down the wrong road, you can always turn around. I had given up on being a polished professional but one day I decided to give it another try. I want the world to know that if I can do, you can do it. It does not matter who does not believe in you, believe in yourself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot in the city would be anyplace to relax and unwind with some great conversation and networking.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my wife Dominique Mays for believing in me and keeping me motivated each day.
