We had the good fortune of connecting with Zykeria and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zykeria, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

I started acting professionally about three years ago. Since then I’ve signed with two agencies, traveled to several cities, worked on many film and television shows, and now look at my second online magazine feature. I strive to become better each year and continue to evolve. This career is very fun, being on set, networking with people just like you, and learning new information about acting; It is all amazing.

I like to think that this career found me. I was always shy, and I fell in love with the art of acting. As a little girl I would watch several movies and television shows and knew I wanted to do something like that. I did my very  first stage play in elementary school. At the time I knew I wanted to keep doing it over and over again, But I didn’t take stage plays seriously until I was thirteen. I had so much fun, and I loved it. So, when looking back at a career I wanted to do;  I knew I wanted that same feeling.

Who knew years later I would actually be working in acting, something I fell in love with as a child. As a young adult I strived to find a career that I would be happy doing. No matter how down I felt acting was my escape and made me feel free. Acting is such a beautiful form of art, to watch it is one thing but to actually create it is so magical and amazing. So, when asked why I pursued an artistic or creative career I like to say that it chooses me. Acting chose me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

As you all know by now my art is acting. There’s so much history and love behind the world of acting. Acting has been around for years and years. It is one of those things that has so many different aspects to it, and I think that’s why I love it so much. You can do stage performances, commercials, films, television, short films, music videos, etc. The list goes on. You’re never too young or too old to try acting. Truly, you’re never too young or old to go after any of your dreams.

People ask me all the time how do you get into acting? Do I need an agent to start? My best advice is to train; take classes and workshops. I’ve taken several and was able to get the knowledge of so much, and I am still learning. You don’t necessarily need an agent but it does make it easier. Networking is key in this industry, surround yourself with people with the same passion as you. How do I get a booking? Like I said, having an agent makes it easier, but some of you that don’t have an agent, you could get bookings through online casting calls, booking sites ie: Backstage and Actors Access. It’s all about the research.

I am very excited about my upcoming projects. I have a new tv series I got casted in which I am very excited to work on. It wasn’t easy to get where I am today. It took a lot of patience with myself and a lot of resilience. I had to overcome struggles and trauma. With my support system I was able to do that. There were so many lessons I learned. Not giving up was the main lesson I learned. As a young adult in this generation, we sometimes get in our own heads and want things to happen overnight and that’s not the case. It takes patience and hard work.

Some success stories do happen overnight, but the other 90% it takes time. You are your own person who’s on their own path and that is what I had to learn. Don’t compare yourself to others. I carry myself with poise, but I also try to be my goofy self. My advice in this acting industry is to be your most authentic self. Everyone has their own struggles they go through, but we cannot allow that to dictate our plans for our future. I want the world to know that I am a fighter who’s fighting for her future and success. Acting is very hard, and it takes practice, research, patience, and time. I’m putting in the work for that success to happen to make sure I reach the dreams I wanted since I was a little girl.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

The city is so huge there are so many options and things you can visit and do. If you like to create things there’s a nice ‘Spin Art paint studio’ and also a place where you could design your own shoes called ‘Sneaker Doodle’. I also like to go with the flow and see what’s out there. The city has so many hidden gems.

Activity wise the list is endless, everyone knows about the infamous ‘Cascade’, but if you’re going with a group of friends I recommend visiting ‘Beat the Bomb’ in Atlanta.

If you’re looking for a YOU day you should look into Woodhouse Spa or Garra Fish Spa.

For all my foodies out there? I don’t think I could even fit the list on here, there’s so many good spots to try. Some of the food places include, ‘The Greatest of The Plates’, ‘The Bando’, ‘Frida’s Mexican Bar and Grill’, and so many other places. You’ll never get bored in ATL.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Over the years I’ve had several forms of support from many. They instilled in me and pushed me to do my very best.
