We had the good fortune of connecting with Shi Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shi, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision I made that has contributed to my success was putting all my trust in God. It’s been about a year since I was last interviewed by VoyageATL and so much has happened.

I started my business Fly High Productions Ltd in 2018 as an independent contractor for NPFTv (National Pro Fast-pitch Softball) . I enjoyed it so much but with it being a Women’s sport the seasons are not that long. Working for the company as a Camera Operator, I was challenged on a daily basis, I feel it was because I am a Black female working in a male driven Industry and was outperforming all the men but that’s my opinion.

At that time I was a recent graduate from Ohio Media School, where I studied Radio & Broadcasting and Audio production so I knew the minimum about being a Camera Operator especially not on a Pro Level but God believed that I could do it so I did it. Throughout that short period of time I grew, I learned how to count on myself. When you are the only one in your corner from work to home it’s a big deal to show up for yourself when no one else will. I learned how to encourage myself and to praise myself for my shortcomings. For Example: I caught a great shot of the center fielder catching an almost home-run while falling over the fence, that shot made it all the way ESPNtop 10. What an accomplishment right? I thought so as well but when I expressed it to others I got nothing back but negativity and that hurts, my Big win went right down the drain.

That pain I felt, I just covered up and went back to work. The season ended but that pain was still there.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel like being creative is very hard on yourself. I own a production company and I feel It makes it challenging because I have such a wide range of what I can do pertains to production.

I fight with myself on what I should create first , Audio, or Visuals, lol man it’s challenging. On the visual side I Love photography. What I love most about photography is capturing moments in life that you can’t get back, but with the image you can always go back to that moment in time in your mind and bring whatever emotion you felt in that moment back.

I also love creating a story with my photography. They alway say that “a picture is worth 1000 words” and I want people to be able to see exactly what is meant to be seen and questions asked but how did you do that lol!

When I create it welcomes you into my life, I create to allow others to see themselves the way they never imaged. My art is creating!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would started with The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, I love learning more about my history, and I feel it is a need for everyone to know, with out Dr. King having a dream and standing his ground we would not have as much diversity today. Then I we will go to The Sky View the Big Ferris Wheel, if your coming to see the city lets see the city from the best view and ride ever.

We will have to have some great food from Gladys Knights Chicken and Waffles, then tour all of the HBCU’s to see all the coming black excellence.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So is there a person and Company I want to dedicate this shoutout to! I would like to Thank and Shoutout GQ of Underrated_LA! GQ is an International Designer, Stylist, Curator and Model. We met working on a Fashion project in Cleveland, OH and have been working together ever since. I have worked on a number of his projects from fashion shows to content photoshoots.
Before I met GQ, I played it safe when it came to expressing my content. I was only putting out content I thought others wanted to see, more so following the trends. GQ has encouraged me to believe more in my content, and in myself He encouraged me to be myself and to not care what others think and to Just Do it!
I feel GQ deserves a little credit and recognition for the next part of my story!
