We had the good fortune of connecting with Regina Brown-Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Regina, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always loved trying my hands at different things. Even when I was younger, I would come home after school and just draw, teach myself sign-language, calligraphy, and quilting from the encyclopedia, write poetry, and so forth. As I got older, I knew I had a creative side that I wanted to tap into some way or another that I could use professionally.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think the most thing I’m proud of is the fact that being a new stylist I’ve been able to accomplish a lot in these last 6 years of being in the industry. Along with my co-worker, we’ve been able to step out of our comfort zone and grow on so many different levels. And I hope that hunger and drive can continue to be in us as we move forward. Plus, the many opportunities that have been presented to network and work with companies to not only promote their brands, but my brand as well. It’s been a humbling experience.
I think I’ve been able to get to where I am today professionally because I have a great support system, Also, I have several family members who own their own businesses and they constantly poured into me during the process regarding business functionality. So, I try to utilize that information in how I operate the salon. I’m also very ambitious, and not afraid to try. Even if I fail at least I know I did my best and didn’t let fear stop me.
Stepping into entrepreneurship is never easy. It’s a feeling of being excited and scared at the same time. But, when you are presented with challenges you face them head on and deal with it. When you make mistakes you take it as a lesson and continue on. Everything about having your own business is about growth, and if you don’t have challenges how will you grow?
The lessons I’ve learned on this journey is to focus on my brand, my clients, and to take the operation of my business day by day. I don’t try to stress anymore on things, people, and situations I can’t control. It’s not my job too. Also, I finally learned that it’s okay to celebrate myself and my achievements, and to do what’s best for me professionally and personally. I’ve really overcome a lot these past few years, especially last year, and I feel like at this moment I deserve every good thing that comes my way. I no longer question if I do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a small town so the closest places I would take my friends to visit would be Gatlinburg or Chattanooga for a relaxing visit in the mountains. Most of my close friends are family-oriented and love going places where its relaxing and things for an entire family to do. So, I’d probably take them to visit Chattanooga because of LookOut Mountain, the Aquarium, and Zoo, then go to eat at RuthChris for dinner and drinks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents, William and Dolly Booker. Unfortunately, our Dad passed away June 2020, but the life lessons I learned in how he never complained despite his health problems, the way he relied on faith to keep him strengthened, and how he always smiled and joked with us despite the good and bad days he would have….etc. taught me to appreciate the little things and rely heavily on faith to keep going despite any obstacles.
