We had the good fortune of connecting with Nycole Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nycole, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea durning the pandemic when I initially wanted a brick and mortar but everything was shut down due to COVID-19. I thought how many times I’ve gotten my hair done and the braider would run out of hair or product, and couldn’t make it to the beauty supply store due to them already being closed. I thought, “how dope would it be to have your haircare products and accessories delivered?” And that’s when the idea came to me to start a beauty supply store that would be mobile. People wouldn’t have to worry about trying to make it to the beauty supply store before they closed or worry about going out during the pandemic. I would drop it off at their home and snap a picture as proof of delivery so that all parties could continue to be safe during the pandemic. On May 7th 2021, I launched my mobile beauty supply store Elegant Boutique Beauty Supply Store.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business Elegant Boutique specializes in an array of hair care products, accessories, hair and wigs for women, men and kids. We are also known for having our own brand of braiding hair that is our top seller. stylist and customer’s absolutely love it and say they will not purchase any other hair now that they have tried ours.
What sets my business apart from others is we are not a traditional beauty supply store. We don’t have a brick and mortar location. We are online based and offer the option of local delivery and worldwide shipping. When people call to inquire about us, like what time we close, where we are located, etc. and we tell people we are online and offer local delivery they are so shocked and always say “we have never heard of anything like this before this is amazing.”
The way I got to where I am today is by hard work, dedication and staying focused. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s the truth. Was it easy? Absolutely not! I am not going to lie or sugar coat anything. The beauty industry, although it is a lucrative industry, it is a tough industry to break into and survive in. Just with any industry there are those who want to see you fail. There will be ups and down, and people may even try to scam you. But the way I overcame this was by not giving up. Every time someone told me “No we cannot approve you for a wholesale account” I didn’t let that stop me. I found ways to still get the products I needed for my store. I made connections with women in other cities and states by reaching out to them and asking “hey this vendor denied me but I know you have an account with them, can I go in on orders with you?” This was tough for me in the beginning because I am a shy person but I know being shy isn’t going to cut it. I had to face my fears and get out of my own way if I wanted to grow in this industry and have my business.
What I, the owner am most proud of when it comes to my brand and business is that I have created something that is not traditional and that a lot of people haven’t really thought of. When most people think of beauty supply stores they think of the traditional brick and mortar, no one really thinks outside the box. I am also proud that we have shipped to 15 states, 1 country and have had multiple stylists inquire and purchase wholesale from us. I am also proud that my business was featured on the local news for being the FIRST and ONLY mobile beauty supply store in the State of Oregon.
What I want my readers to know about my brand and what we offer is that we are very unique in what we do. We offer something that no one else offers, which is our own brand of braiding hair. And there aren’t too many mobile beauty supply stores around. We also offer wholesale. We want stylist, braiders and barbers to be able to save money when they are shopping with us and not just 5% or 10%. We also listen to our customers on their needs and wants when it comes to things we should be carrying if we aren’t carrying something yet and we work our hardest to get the item in a timely fashion.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Where would I take my best friend if she came to visit? That’s a good question. If she came to visit in the summer (which I would suggest because that’s when we get decent weather in Oregon lol) I would take her to some restaurants that have outdoor seating, great mimosas and good food. I don’t necessarily have a favorite place but there are so many good food places in Portland that I know we’d be able to find something we both would enjoy. I would take her to Multnomah Falls. It’s a great place to hike, it’s hard but its so much fun. And once you reach the top, the view is absolutely breathtaking.
There are typically day parties happening in the summer on either a Saturday or Sunday so we would hit those home as well. I’d take her to the mall so she could do some shopping (tax free lol) and see if I could get a pass to the Nike Employee store, where we’d be able to get 40% off.
But honestly, I’d do whatever it was that she wanted to do, which I sure would involve happy hour and food which would give us an opportunity to try a lot of different restaurants in town.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my whole support system. Those who have supported me through my journey and those who continue to support me. From late night phone calls, prayers, giving me ideas, or just letting me vent when needed. Without my support system, I’m not sure where I’d be today and if I would have made it through some of my tough times.
I also want to dedicate this to all of my customers who continue to support me everyday. Through purchasing from me, recommending my business to friends and family or tagging me on social media post. I greatly appreciate it.
