We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikal Yemane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikal, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
The way I balance my work life is through calendar planning and having my whole day planned out from start to finish has been really helpful to help me stay accountable to my goals and to also get things done. My work life balance has changed completely especially within the last couple of years. I used to work 2 to 3 jobs since high school, so its always been important to plan things out so that I didn’t miss deadlines for my school assignments, to also make sure that I made it to work on time, I was spending time with my family/friends, and that I also found time for myself to do things that I enjoyed. During that time, I was working during the week and also working on the weekends. I also had to make sure that I was finding time for volunteering, getting involved in the community, and getting involved in clubs and extracurricular activities. Something else that’s helped me to balance things out is figuring out if it’s urgent or important. My balanced has also changed again within the last couple of months, I currently only work 1 job Monday through Friday from 8am-6pm and it changes sometimes, but having weekends off and evenings off gives me time to focus on other things., but I am still a full time college student, and I also have an online business. I plan out my week every Sunday and write down things that need to get done for the week and what I’ll get done what day and what time has been really helpful to find a balance.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a full time college student with a major in psychology, I also work a full time job working with children with autism doing ABA work, and I also have an online business relating to marketing. Something that im excited about is the growth and change that im seeing in myself daily. How I got to where I am today professionally is by keeping my options open, networking, and by building relationships. No, it wasn’t easy but it has been worth it. The way I overcame the challenges was by my willingness to get out of my comfort zone, being willing to learn/get educated and working on my communication skills. Some of the lessons I’ve learned are to always follow my dreams and to continue having a figure it out mindset no matter what’s going on. What I want the world to know is that to always follow your dreams and never give up. One of my biggest goals is to make impact and change peoples lives and to fill needs.. If you want to learn more about what I have going on let’s chat and find ways how we can both add value to each others lives.
I have nutrition, beauty, home, and personal care products. I make baskets, I offer web-tours, coffee meetings, 1 and 1 meetings, and I also do giveaways. Coaching & mentorship
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would go to short pump and walk around/shop at the mall, the river, and we would even take a road trip to D.C. or Maryland so that I can show them around National Harbor, the aquarium, and visit the museum. I would take them to some of my favorite restaurants in the Richmond area. We would drive around the city talking or listening to music.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Theres a lot of people and lots of organizations to thank and shoutout. I want to thank God for everything. I want to thank my family and friends that continue to support me no matter what I decide to do in life. I want to thank my coaches and mentors for guiding me every single day through life, business and for being great examples and for always encouraging me to dream big. I want to thank my high school/college professors that continue to push me to reach for the stars. I want to thank the whole Our Minds Matter organization for what they stand for and for allowing young adults to share their stories about mental health and for making it a safe space where you feel safe, heard, loved, cared for, enough, etc. A big shoutout to my twin sister for always having my back and always being by my side no matter what. Thank you for always supporting my decisions, for being my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. Shoutout to everyone in my life that continues to pour into me and that encourages me.
