Meet Zion Mcthomas | Creative and Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Zion Mcthomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zion, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started this art career and my businesses to have more control of my life. I just don’t like the rat race and the idea of grinding. I choose freedom and creativity over the grind every time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is personal, unconventional, inspiring, and full of love. I started my artist career in 2018 going by ZEE. I was going to be the next noname or Queen Latifah but I had to be me. In 2019, I really started to push music and try to find my way. However, there were still some things I needed to work through. I was in Kent, Ohio going to grad school for music theory and stressed. My car broke down grad school was really hard, and I was all alone outside of my cousin who lived in Cleveland. I really thought about ending it all, but what kept me afloat was the music. The creativity and the freedom that came from it pushed me in ways. I never thought were possible. I really became an adult through writing raps. I started to deconstruct my life and traumas. I really confronted some of the ways I perpetuated victimhood and by 2020, I was on a journey of redefining in rediscovering my inner child and telling her all of the things that I didn’t hear growing up. Since 2021, I changed my name from Zee to ZeeThaNomad. The music has went from me, trying to sound like some of my faves to me, sounding like me. I talk about my faith, my past my hopes, my dreams, my hot takes, and anything in between. With music and poetry, I am truly in my God body and being my full self.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, for starters we go to Waffle House for breakfast cause why not. Next, we might walk the beltline or go to the trap music museum. Lunchtime, we’re hitting up Piedmont Park and having a nice picnic. We might go to the puppetry art museum or the high museum. Depending on what night, we will hit up a poetry night because that’s the only time I really go out. Mondays are for Poetry on Peter. Tuesdays, we’re going to The Circle. Wednesdays, we got options. We can go to who wanna pho or the vital movement. Thursdays, we will hit up urban grind and if my friend is here on a Friday, we would end up at hotel Claremont getting a drink

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to first shoutout my homie Unique and all of the Werkin Herbs crew. Yall really mean the world to me. Secondly, my momma, you are truly Divinity in human form. Love you.
Lastly, every friend I’ve made in my travels over my life. From Mississippi to LA, I love the NOMAD FAM forever and always.
