We had the good fortune of connecting with ZAY and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi ZAY, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Atlanta, GA. Like most, my childhood has had a major impact on who I am today. I was born in the projects, Techwood Homes to be exact. The first public housing project in the United States. Infamously known for murder, drugs, and kidnappings. My parents made sure I spent a lot of time inside because of what was going on outside. I created my world most days, alone in my room daydreaming, watching TV and listening to the radio, discovering possibility models like Tupac, Biggie, and OutKast. My dad, a fan of oldies, left cassette tapes around, introducing me to R&B and Jazz. Those early years spent in isolation instilled a deep appreciation for creativity and self-expression, shaping me into the introspective artist I am today. Fueling my passion for storytelling, and motivating me to navigate life’s complexities through the power of art.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been writing music and designing since I was eight, making CD covers by hand and later digitally during my time at Clark Atlanta University. Initially, it was a private thing, but I started taking it more seriously during my freshman year, inspired by the artistic atmosphere around me. I met a friend on campus who was producing for mainstream artists. We exchanged info and agreed to work. Now I’m recording instead of just writing, designing official artwork, and putting it online. I locked in on that 1-2 step process from my childhood & mastered it but at the expense of my education. I was going to class by day, working part-time in the evening, and going to the studio late at night. It was hard trying to balance it all and by junior year, my grades fell & I had reached my Loan limit, ultimately sending me back to my mom’s house. Despite the challenges of watching my friends graduate without me and facing the realities of adult life, I persevered. I kept creating through it all I refused to let the setbacks block my expression. I remained positive and determined & chose to see them as opportunities for growth. That’s what I’m most proud of about myself. I’ve experienced both financial success and homelessness, yet my dedication to creativity never wavered. Through these trials, I’ve discovered the importance of pursuing your passion, regardless of external pressures. This journey has provided me with clarity and purpose, affirming the power of Art. I’m not at my destination yet but I hope that my story serves as a testament to the significance of following your dreams as it can serve as both a guiding light and a compass.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Fresh off the plane on Monday, we would go to Taco Pete Bistro near the airport for their LA-style burgers, wings, and drinks. On Tuesday, we work out and hit the courts at LA Fitness, then recharge with wraps at Tassili’s Raw Reality Cafe. Wednesday we take a drive through the city, maybe catch a game, and eat at the Hudson Grille. On Thursday, we have the option to go to the High Museum of Art or the Apex Museum to soak in some culture. Friday we would take the family to Piedmont Park & get dinner at Grindhouse Killer Burgers. Saturday morning starts with a session at the studio, and then later we’d go to Six Flags with my kids. On Sunday, we break bread at J Christopher’s before heading back to the airport.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife, Sha’na, and our two children, Don and Zauri, are my anchors. Their love and support has carried me through life’s highs and lows. It’s been tough the last few years but throughout it all, Sha’na has stood by my side. I am forever grateful.
