We had the good fortune of connecting with Zamiyah Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zamiyah, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Photography was always one of those skills that people pay attention to detail to especially after editing. I would see photographers on Instagram showcasing all their artistic themed photographs and I felt captivated and wanted to learn more about this art. My mom bought me my first ever camera in 2018 and gifted it to me on Christmas day, and since then I would take it almost everywhere with me. I’ve always gotten compliments on my pictures I would take of people and decided to take it seriously as a business. In 2022, I have grown and learned a lot more about photography and the creative aspect of the skill. It was a rough path and took a lot of time and effort only because of the doubts and such, but I made it to where I am today by not giving up on myself. Captured By Zee is my brand that I will stick by and I am very pleased that I pursued this career path.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Having a gift for art is never easy. You are going to always have challenges and doubt when building from the ground up. I am most proud of myself for coming this far and still willing to learn new things even if it may be difficult. My camera stays with me 24/7 so I am constantly taking pictures of different objects to increase my portfolio and editing skills. I have had some challenges such as “competition” , where someone tried to prove to me that they were better than me and the self doubt when I compare myself to other photographers. I’ve learned that you move at your own pace especially with photography, your images won’t look as detailed as the next until you learn the behind the scenes of editing and the manual mode on a camera. It all depends on how much work you put in, not only for yourself, but for your future. Captured By Zee is where creativity is captured.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend to Iron Age. Iron Age is a Korean BBQ place and I have just recently started eating KBBQ last year and I absolutely love it. For the rest of the week, would probably consist of going to different places we may have seen on Tiktok that looks exciting and fun to try out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my shoutout to the people who helped me get where I am today. For starters, my mom, I told her my vision and she made it possible just by buying a camera for me to start off. Next is my old high school teacher, Dr. Echoles, I was in her Journalism/ Yearbook class and was planning to take some kids out, but I expressed to her how I wanted to be a photographer and practice and she let me stay in the class. Chanitra Dreher, my mentor, is a photographer I met off Instagram and she has help me grow also especially when I was still new into learning how to use my camera and the settings. She took time out of her day to help me as best as she could over a screen. My sister, Zakiya, is one of my forever models. We are always planning photoshoot ideas that we can bring into reality. My friend, Zenobia, is also one of my forever models. She is very introverted, but has no problem being in front of the camera to demonstrate my creative gift and brand. The biggest shout-out goes to my future clientele that trusts me to flourish their vision for the images I take of them. Last but certainly not least, God because he gave me the ability to learn these set skills to help me become successful. .
