We had the good fortune of connecting with Zaineb “ZiZi” Hassan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zaineb “ZiZi”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My drive and thought process for launching ZiZi Yoga, after completing 7 rigorious lengthy years of Pharmacy school was “Simply not taking NO for an answer”. My word is bond, hence the embedment of my core foundation I had a specific vision, honed in on what I knew in my heart to be pure, addressed a specific audience and 6 years later here we are. My story was already written from the most high, I was merely evolving with the follow-through of my journey.

What should our readers know about your business?
ZiZi Yoga is a company that works with a specific target audience of professional athletes in the collegiate level and beyond. We work on the emphasis of yoga, mindfulness, and meditation through a holistic approach integrated within performance stages for all sports combined. Each position in any sport has its unique technique of movement which enhances flexibility, agility, mobility and prevents injury. I am excited to work with individuals who strive to be the best version of theirselves on a daily basis which enhances my fuel to live abundantly. Although we teach, we also are students of the game in learning from different experiences. Best way to gain any form of leverage in life is fostering relationships and staying disciplined to the goal at task. It’s never easy, working as a black minority woman in a male dominating industry. I’ve gained knowledge of self and embrace grace for every mistake encountered, be content with the lesson, and to never stop learning.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I just recently moved back to the DMV for a dream job opportunity, soon come. I’m an early riser (4:00 am 7 days a week) which many have become accustomed to, therefore, if I am ever awake past 9:00 pm it would be for a vital reason. I love day time activities; playing chess in the park, working out outdoors, hiking, surfing, paddle boarding, library or bookstore (I can cuddle cup next to an enticing book for hours at a time) exploring museums and vintage vinyl stores, live music, piano and guitar learning sessions, and recently tapping into my artistic side. DC is very well known for its plethora of delicious foods, and black owned businesses. Cane’s off of H St is delicious and as far as hang outs a good rooftop is always a great move with beautiful conversation organically flowing. I don’t drink so lounges and clubs are not my expertise.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
An array of people that are near and dear to my soul deserve the utmost recognition and infinite gratitude.

My parents initially where not the most open minded to the career switch but eventually warmed up to where I am now.

Myron Flowers, Performance Coach in MD, was one of the first people to stand by my corner.

Janet Stevens Cook and “The Cook Family+Foundation” have rocked with me since I first began teaching to a niche market and I view Janet as a second mother and mentor.

Sydney Smith’s guidance, kindness, and raw cut throat personality is instilled in me forever.

Will Barton has open several doors in the NBA world for 6 years that wouldn’t have been possible without him, and merely only because we fostered a profound relationship of trust amongst ourselves.

The Dreamville Family, Olu, Adam, Felton, PROOF! I am not even sure where to begin as far as thanking them for trusting me to not only build a narrative that bridges the gap between Hip Hop and Holistic Health but they’ve been the most impactful for allowing me to be the creative in the outreach of communities world wide and challenge me in ways I would only dream of.

And finally my best friends, sisters, confidants and saviors. Nybia, Adeline, Essence, Yodit, Ruth. You are my rock and talking to them daily broadens my perspective and allows me to vibrate on a different spectrum.
