We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvonne White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yvonne, every day, we think about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My now husband Warren taught me how to play chess. It took about 6 months for me to understand the basic rules and objective of checkmate. After learning we decided we wanted to improve our game. We searched endlessly for any materials that were easy to comprehend.
We eventually learned how to start teaching chess and that is when we knew we wanted to start a chess business. We knew we didn’t want to be just another scholastic company and saw a need to teach chess to students of all ages with comprehensive learning materials. We wanted to make chess fun and accessible to everyone.
The problem with the way chess is taught, in my opinion, is that it is filled with highly technical content that is hard for most people to digest and the world of chess can be intimidating for new players.
We had a vision for Chess Made Fun to bring chess to the masses. We have a fresh approach for teaching chess by simplifying the learning process and making the game fun.
What should our readers know about your business?
We reopened our doors in October of 2018 deciding to be a chess equipment supplier selling chess equipment and educational games throughout the US. Our mission was to spread chess to as many communities throughout the US as we could. We have had to pivot several times to continue with our mission and the many challenges that have come our way. The biggest challenge we and many others had to learn to over come was the pandemic. It wasn’t until then, did we decide to switch our learning from over the board to virtual lessons. We now have over 20 coaches who are ready to teach you how to play based on your availability and skill level. We look forward to the future.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
These are our favorite spots in the city to check out on a typical weekend. We are headed to our local downtown spots in Hiram and Dallas, GA. Let’s go!
Friday night we are taking you to our favorite restaurant in Hiram, San Lucas, for a nice dinner and a few drinks. After that we are headed to downtown Hiram where we will enjoy a cigar and a game of chess at DD & Company Inc. – Smokes Lounge.
For a full day of fun we will start our Saturday morning with an amazing cup of joe at Piece of Heaven bakery. There is a chess table set up as we enjoy our coffee and sweet aroma in the air. Next is a fresh breakfast at Frannick’s Cafe next door. We make sure to order the Eggs Benedict. After breakfast we will head over to Downtown Dallas where the city puts on events for the community, or there is the Farmer’s Market to enjoy. The next stop is The Dallas Markets where there is plenty of shopping and food trucks for lunch. They even have chess setup in the game room. Before we head home for dinner we will stop by Vintage Wine Bar where they have local wine and beer along with some chess sets waiting for their next game. We will stop by Sal’s down the street to pick up some pizza and calzones for dinner at home.
Sunday morning we will enjoy a home cooked breakfast and pack a lunch. We will spend the day having fun at Sweetwater Creek State Park. They have plenty of hiking trails and scenic views for all ages to enjoy. Don’t worry we won’t forget our travel chess set.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It takes a lot of support to start your own business! My first shoutout goes to my husband, Warren White. Without his encouragement and continued support Chess Made Fun wouldn’t be where it is today. My family has been very supportive and deserves a big SHOUTOUT for everything they have done. Professionally we are very lucky to know and work with Kim Wilson at Kangaroo Virtual Services, Lynne Watts at Dreamer Achiever Coaching, Sam Rogers at Amazing 7 Studios, Wilson Farrales who helps with our Digital Marketing, Cameron Scott who designed our amazing logo and Kevin Urbina at Media Titan who helps with our videography.
