We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvette Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yvette, how do you think about risk?
When I think about risk, I think of it in the context of two different perspectives. I believe one type is purely a blind risk when pursuing a new career or new venture without researching or having any prior knowledge or experience. To me, this is the highest form of risk in that the consequences of not being successful may outweigh the potential.

On the other hand, there is calculated risk which involves some element of the unknown but is somewhat subjective in the degree of risk that I would assume. I believe it is the uncertainty of the unknown that makes me nervous and anxious when dealing with a situation that involves risk. Nevertheless, risk can be a great move for one’s future as we are often encouraged to take that leap of faith in pursuit of our dreams.

I believe taking risks has played a major role in two aspects of my life. First, when I graduated from college, I initially thought I wanted to pursue an MBA degree and take on a career in corporate America and assume more of a calculated risk as I mentioned earlier. Instead, I decided that I could benefit more from the experience of traveling the world for many years which enabled me to gain a different perspective of the world that has had a major impact on my life and the other choices I have made for my life and career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Fashion Creative. I believe what sets me apart from others in this space is the vision that I bring to whatever project I create. It is this creative mindset that enables me to generate a futuristic approach to my work that in some instances seems unforeseeable on one hand but is eventually emulated by others who recognize and identify with the image that is portrayed in my work. I am often delighted to see how my vision & style is often duplicated after I publish my work as I believe it is the highest form of validation and compliment.

I am most proud of my sons that have grown up to be successful young men. It is their success that has led to my pursuing my next Chapter after discovering that there is a niche market for women over 40 to be trend setters. I believe in a lot of ways that pursing this venture is in a sense taking the road less traveled and I am excited that by doing so has made all the difference.

I wish I could say that the journey was easy. Of course, it was not! I’ve overcome many challenges, particularly those that involved really understanding my audience, navigating the critics and others who imitate my work which at times I misunderstood as a way of devaluing the creativity.

Over time I’ve learned that your critics can some times be your best asset and a great spur. They can help you reach further than to eventually exceed expectations. I overcame the challenges with persistence, prayer, by showing up repeatedly even when I didn’t want to, discussing it with fellow colleagues and keeping a positive attitude no matter what!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Friday – High Museum Friday Jazz where they have great music, drinks, and art. Then head over to Saints + Council for dinner.

Saturday – Visit the Atlanta History Center and my favorite book store 44th & 3rd bookseller then head to Ponce City Market or head up to Monteluce Winery in North Georgia.

Sunday -I have a few favorite brunch spots. I would definitely take them to Haven in Brookwood, Buttermilk Kitchen, or Toast on Lenox. We would do some shopping at Buckhead Atlanta Shoppes and finish the evening with dinner and cocktails at Rumi’s.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout definitely goes to my family who has supported and backed my endeavors. I would also give credit to my wonderful friends. I have a great community of women who come from diverse backgrounds. They have been awesome mentors to listen, laugh, and give support in my life.

I love reading and I have a great collection of books that encouraged and motivated me along the way. One of my all-time favorites would be Nelson Mandela’s -Conversations With Myself, The Alchemist – Paul Coelho, and Dr. Wayne Dyer – The Power of Intention have all been great books of encouragement for me.
