We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuxin Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yuxin, what are you inspired by?
The most significant part of my inspiration for drawing comes from observing daily life. For example, when I walk the streets, I notice how the flowers blossom and fade and the sun rises and sets. The seasons show different sceneries, and I enjoy capturing the changes in nature and incorporating them into my creations. I also find inspiration in books, movies, and fairy tales, as well as in discussions with other people.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My most valuable trait is my sense of childish curiosity. While many artists focus on refining their techniques or showcasing their boundless imagination, I am lucky and proud to have retained my childlike heart. I strive to avoid becoming a dull adult and constantly seek the purest emotions.
My artistic path has been quite smooth. Since childhood, I have loved drawing, and my parents helped me develop my talent by finding art tutors. I had the good fortune to study under some outstanding art instructors who taught me skills and encouraged me to create freely and embrace bold ideas.
In order to prepare for the entrance exam, I received extensive art training before going to college. That was the most challenging period. I felt disoriented because of the never-ending cycle of tests and rankings, and I even started to doubt whether I truly loved art. I realized later that repeatedly drawing the same type of work inhibited my creativity. It wasn’t until I went to college that I regained my confidence and overcame the obstacle. I learned an important lesson: to live in the present and never worry about the future. Focusing on doing what you have to do now is the most important thing. Lastly, I hope my stories and illustrations can heal and warm people’s hearts. I want my work to help adults rediscover their inner child and bring joy and happiness to children.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend from China visited me in Atlanta, I would start by taking them to the World of Coca-Cola to learn about its fascinating history. Then, we’d visit must-see attractions like the Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta Zoo, Centennial Olympic Park, the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and my school, Savannah College of Art and Design, to experience the city’s unique charm. We could also explore Stone Mountain Park and Helen Town. For food, Chick-fil-A is a must-try, along with some classic Southern cuisine to savor the region’s flavors. We’d head to the Fox Theatre when evening falls to watch an amazing opera. I believe this itinerary would make for a fantastic and memorable visit!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I want to sincerely thank my family. For me, the support of my parents has been crucial. Their support and concern about my trip have been invaluable in inspiring me to create since I have always loved drawing, and I am deeply grateful for that.
Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to Hayao Miyazaki. His animations inspire me to create interesting and meaningful stories. Every time I watch his films, I feel moved and motivated. He has had an important effect on my artistic development.
Lastly, I want to thank myself for my bravery and diligence, which have allowed me to grow, improve, and become a better version of myself.
