We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuwei Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yuwei, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
I am a multidisciplinary designer specializing in illustration and motion graphics. I have developed a unique illustration style that incorporates textures, bright colors, and a variety of characters to not only convey my own stories, but also to help brands and companies tell their unique stories. Motion graphics have helped me achieve my goal as a visual communicator by allowing me to combine my illustrations into animations and become a more effective storyteller. I enjoy portraying natural elements such as landscapes, trees, plants, fruits, and animals, which are my favorite subjects. I like to observe even the smallest moments in life, like a quiet afternoon, where a tea cup and sunlight can tell a story. As for my end goal. I want to try something new! Although it has little to do with my current career, I’ve always been interested in handicrafts. But since I’ve chosen the path of art and creativity, I hope to never give up on my dreams and try to realize any bold ideas. In the future, I hope to become a business owner of an art and craft store, combining my own artistic and creative ideas to bring new life to this unique store.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an introverted child, I found drawing to be the most enjoyable activity. For more than ten years, I’ve been passionate about art, so I pursued an art major—interior design—as an undergraduate. After graduation, my parents supported me in studying abroad, and I had to choose my major again. This time, I picked graphic design but missed my love for illustration. At that time, I didn’t think illustration could be my future career, so I chose a profession with more job prospects.

During my years of studying graphic design at SCAD, I realized that I wasn’t happy with my work and lacked confidence. However, taking illustration classes gave me a new lease on life. After finishing my first illustration class happily, I felt a sense of accomplishment and slowly realized that my confidence came from illustration. I wanted to pursue what I loved, so I chose illustration as my second major.

When I learned about the illustration industry, I had a change of heart. I believe that both traditional and digital illustrations give a unique personality to various products in different industries. I’ve created my own unique style through graphic design and illustration. By chance, I took Motion Media Design courses and discovered an inextricable link between the two majors. I decided to combine my skills and become a motion illustrator.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Sure! Here are some of my favorite spots in Savannah :

1. Forsyth Park: It’s my favorite park to go to! It has a beautiful fountain, tree-lined walkways, and lush greenery.

2. SCAD campus: Even if you’re not a SCAD student, you can always visit the SCAD Museum for different exhibitions.

3. Historic District: This is the heart of Savannah and the best place to start your tour of the city. The district is home to numerous parks, historic buildings, and other attractions!

I hope this helps! enjoy! : )

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s definitely going to be a long list. As an international student studying in the US, everything is not easy. First, I would like to thank my parents who support my dreams and always have been my backbone. Without them, I wouldn’t have had the opportunities to achieve what I have achieved today. I would also like to thank my girlfriend who gives me so much encouragement and support, not only in life but also in my career. She is the reason why I know motion graphics and why I am in the industry. A shoutout to SCAD and to all the professors who have taught me from English to graphic design to illustration and motion graphics. Their dedication has helped me and all the SCAD students to grow and thrive. And lastly, to all my friends! They are awesome!
