We had the good fortune of connecting with Yung Badu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yung, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
The people around me, their situations, and how they move, react and, handle them. I got some strong minded and strong willed people around me, so I’m constantly being motivated to keep going when I feel low. Constantly getting new ideas for things cause someone is always creating something new around me. And they’re so talented, so it just makes me wanna show off a little bit too.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is everything to me, literally the reason I’m here today. I battle with mental health, and addiction, so things can get really dark at times, but music’s always been the thing that pulls me back. No matter what I go through, I can express it through my music, even if it’s just for me and no one understands it. But luckily, people do relate and do understand, and they love it cause I’m just saying what people are feeling and are afraid to convey. I’ve been through the worst, so what someone has to say about me is the least of my worries. I don’t mind sharing what I’ve been through so someone else doesn’t have to go through it.

One of the things I’m most proud of is that I managed to independently record and release a full length album by myself, no team, no help, all while going through a manic bipolar episode, and being involuntarily locked up in the psych ward twice.

Honestly, I’m still not where I want to be professionally with my career, but I’m happy and that’s all that matters. There’s road blocks every day, lack of motivation, lack of support, lack of funds. My grandma always told me, just do your best, that’s all you can do. And that’s all I’ve done, and will continue to do, done the best with what I’ve been given, and now I’m giving it to you.

I want the world to know, even when things seem impossible, trust in God and the plans She has for you. It may not go like you planned, but it’ll always go how you need it to.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t live in Atlanta, but I got the chance to visit recently and babyyyy, that is Black Hollywood forreal. I loved it.

I would recommend any breakfast place in College Park, especially Breakfast Boys. Amazing brunch and mimosas.

OLG, or Old Lady Gang was amazing as well. Great food and vibes.

If you’re in a seafood mood, can’t go wrong with Juicy Crab.

I recommend the Atlanta botanical gardens, a lot to see, beautiful scenery.

The Trap Music museum is a must go when you’re in Atlanta, nothing like it, especially if you’re into rap and the history of it. 10/10 recommend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandparents. My motivation behind everything I do, every choice I make I think about them and how it’s gonna affect them. I’m a grandpa’s girl, raised by my grandparents, like the realest people are. They’ve been in my corner before I was even a thought, and I’m their first priority, especially when I don’t deserve it. They’ve sacrificed so much for me to be in the position I am today, and I’m gonna give it back to them tenfold. I have to.
