We had the good fortune of connecting with Yu Hsuan (Sally) Chung and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yu Hsuan (Sally), can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from New Taipei City, Taiwan, where my love for drawing and crafts led me to study Industrial Design in Tatung University. Now, I’m punching my Master’s degree in Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) majoring in Interactive Design in the United States. During my undergrad, I became interested in the growing field of UX design in Taiwan, especially the aspects of user research and behavior. Wanting to create easy-to-use solutions, I moved to the United States to study UX design at a graduate level. This change broadened my view of design and enriched my education. In Savannah College of Art and design, my projects focused on understanding users and improving communication, which really helped me learn how to solve complex design problems. Moving from Taiwan to the United States and shifting from industrial design to UX design not only improved my skills but also deepened my understanding of how design can really change the way people interact with technology.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Master student in Interactive Design, aiming to transition into UX and product design. My Bachelor’s was in Industrial Design in Taiwan. This gave me skills in design and understanding users’ needs. The biggest challenge I faced was adapting to a new language and culture while applying to a graduate program in the United States.Despite these initial difficulties, I really enjoy this journey, learning to showcase my work effectively and blending my industrial design background with UX principles. My goal is to make interactions between users and technology simpler and more rewarding, making sure that my designs not only meet user needs but also improve their overall experience. This commitment to solving problems shows my determination and my ongoing passion for creating effective, user-focused designs.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends came to visit me in Savannah, we’d start by walking around the beautiful historical streets and trying some great local food: some delicious seafood and Southern dishes here. We’d finish our time in Savannah watching a beautiful sunset at Tybee Island. After enjoying Savannah’s unique charm, we’d head to Florida for fun. We’d go on the exciting rides at Disney World and Universal Studios. Next, we’d kayak in calm springs, where we might see manatees swimming nearby. Seeing these gentle animals up close is really special. This trip mixes the thrill of theme parks with the calm of nature, making it a perfect week. It’s a great mix of fun and peace.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m really thankful for all my family and especially my dad, who has always supported me no matter what. He always there to help when I needed it. His support has been a constant help throughout my school years, letting me focus on my studies without any other stressors, as he handles everything else for me. Now, as I study in the United States, his support is still a big part of why I keep going. I’m also grateful for my friends, who offer the same kind of support, always encouraging each other to keep going and do better. All this support makes my journey not just easier, but also more inspiring and rewarding.
