We had the good fortune of connecting with Yolanda Whiters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yolanda, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I understand that there is a certain level of risk that accompanies the decisions I make in life and in business as an entrepreneur. When taking a risk, I ask myself the question – what is the potential outcome when I apply my time, energy and effort? The answer is always the same – the outcome is whatever I create it to be. I will sacrifice my time, my energy and apply all of my effort towards creating the outcome that I want. I believe that success is achieved by doing and learning during this process.
I have been known to take smaller steps, as opposed to big, bold steps, to achieve success. There is no shame in taking the time to develop a business and move at a pace that allows you to minimize the risk and maximize the reward. As I started to take larger risks, they appeared miniscule in comparison to the reward.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work today in transportation and truck parking is a direct result and reflection of my career in the corporate world. I have not changed, I am just better. Earlier in my career, I felt compelled to give my time, talent and resources to help other companies. I am still focused, fair, structured, fiscally responsible, motivational, and as result- oriented as I was in corporate management. Today, however, I see things in a much larger spectrum and bigger picture. It’s not just about the company, or the great drivers and team partners who work with us. It is about us all serving and helping others and each other to be better than we were yesterday. What we are doing today is much larger and more impactful than I had even imagined. I am so proud that I can proclaim I am in no way bigger or better than anyone I serve. I am just different. We have all been created differently and that is more than okay. The individual talents and uniqueness that we give contribute our part to the vision that is bigger than us. For YOWHI, in our serving and helping others, we show the world by example that we can all become better by making it more than just about one person or about one company. We are doing the work that we are here to do. And, because we are all doing the work that we are called and led to do, we never lose- we win or we learn.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Two of my favorite places that I love to visit and to bring visitors to, when I can ,are two black owned women-owned restaurants:
1.) Nouveau Bar and Grill, Jonesboro GA – the owner is a Chicago native (like me) and I adore everything about her restaurant. I am super proud of her!
2.) Slutty Vegan, Jonesboro GA world renowned and an amazing vegan restaurant!! I especially love it because I stopped eating meat in May 2020.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have two people that we have to give recognition \. The first is Asa Fain. When we met Asa, we were a corporation with a concept that had not been proven but we had data to suggest what we were saying would work. Asa provided a platform and an opportunity for us to start to build and what we have grown into is a direct result of that chance he took on us. The next would be Dan Moore of East Metro RV and Boat Storage in Covington GA. When we opened our location in Covington GA, we were met with a string of unfortunate circumstances that ranged from death to a debilitating injury. Dan was there for us and guided us through the process of opening the first parking location in Covington. Dan also referred a significant number of our initial customer base, which was instrumental in filling our location in less than 30 days. We are eternally grateful to him and words can never express how grateful we are for the angel God sent to us in that time of need.
