We had the good fortune of connecting with Yolanda “Poetic Flow” Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yolanda “Poetic Flow”, what matters most to you?
Character & integrity matters most, as well as a respect for time. As a business woman, entrepreneuer, and senior paralegal of 23 years, these things matter not just in professional life, but also life in general. When a person has character, integrity and respect for time, things run so much smoother. As a professional it is essential to have these values dealing with a variety of clients. I focus on making sure in my own businesses as an entrepreneur that my clients not simply are provided with a service, but moreso an experience. An experience will make people feel a certain memorable way, which is how you either get repeat clients, who do word of mouth advertising for you or you get a 1 time client who will also do word of mouth “warning” advertisement. As such, don’t just provide a service, make sure client walks away with a beautiful experience of your service. This is where character, integrity & respect for time come into play.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ll start with being a Poet. I’ve been writing since about 1984. My late grandmother saw the poet in me and encouraged me to write. Fast forward to 2004, when on a broader scale I began sharing some of my poetry. Fast forward to 2008, I published my 1st book of poems “Poetic Flow: Poetry for Your Soul.” I write based upon feelings, words, people, conversations, events, etc. My Motto is “Inspiring, Motivating & Encouraging the World – One Poem/Positive Vibe at a Time.”
Poetry comes natural to me, it just flows, hence my name “Poetic Flow.” In 2014 I released my 2nd book of poetry “Love-N-Life” and my 1st book of positive quotes “Positive Vibes by Poetic Flow.” In 2014, I became co-owner of a Television & Film Production Studio “No Budget Studio” with Ursula Joyner in Kansas City, KS. I produced, wrote, directed, and learned to work the camera. Ursula had been in the entertainment industry in California for 25 years doing hosting, producing, writing, etc. and decided she wanted to bring something that was never done, back to her hometown of Kansas. This resulted in an Independent Television & Film Studio.
We had so many independent filmmakers from Missouri and Kansas come and rent out space to film their short films, commercials, scenes for their movies, etc. We had sets from a court room, church, park, jail cell, classroom, executive office, bar/restaurant, Dr office, interrogation room, waiting room, nurses station, police station, music studio, and more. It was a phenomenal experience that I’ll never forget. I returned to Atlanta in 2016 (I’m a Chicago native, born and raised, moved to ATL in 2010), and established “Poetic Flow Productions” which was birthed out of my experience and being co-owner of “No Budget Studio.” I will always attribute this establishment to Ursula, who without learning so much from her and her bringing me on as co-owner, I know I would not have established “Poetic Flow Productions.” Out of my production company, I established “Poetic Flow Photography.”
I also established in 2015 “JB Consulting” which I consult individual business owners on how to successfully establish their businesses and artists/creatives on how to properly protect themselves and their work/businesses. In 2019, I became a Podcastor on Anchor, sharing my poetry from a different perspective. I reflected back to my audience how and or why I came to write the poem and then I took the messege in the poem and incorporated it into everyday life, thereby giving my audience some positive insight on life’s situations, circumstances, and journey overall. Recently, in 2020, I have become the Creative Director and Photographer for Indigoz Shoes (www.indigoz.store) owned by Toi Cheri Kyles. I create video advertisement/promotion content and some editing of projects. I oversee graphic artists/designers work to make sure what they create is in line with the business needs of the owner. It is a very exciting new role that I truly enjoy. I also do photography for promotion flyers and do videography for promotional videos, commercials, etc.
There are always challenges to overcome in any business and life, however, the most important thing to remember is the passion you have for that business, career, etc. and work hard to achieve it, never letting up even when it seems it’s impossible to reach/attain. Your Passion is Your Purpose and as long as you understand that, you will conquer your desires and dreams. “Faith without works is dead” so be sure to do the work that will place you where you are trying to go. Believe in the power of manifesting and you can pull all you want into direct alignment of you.
As for me and my brand that I want the world to know is that I am authentically me. I stay true to form and I make no apologies for telling people NO. I protect my peace and sanity and in doing so, I also protect my brand. As stated earlier, my clients don’t just get a service of photography, business consulting, production, etc., but instead they get an experience, and entire positive vibe, that leaves them wanting more (hence repeat clients and new clients they refer to me). Character, Integrity, Respect of Time will always prevail.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In this time of a pandemic, that isn’t happening, but if no pandemic, I’m a Chicagoian living in Atlanta so we’d definitely go to Harold’s Chicken & Ice Bar on Edgewood. I’d take them to Varsity, the MLK Center & tour, Jackson Street Bridge to do some photography, Midtown (Piedmont Park & Botanical Garden), Junipers, Einsteins, the High Museum, and a few other places.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I come from a line of strong, intelligent, independent and fierce women (all of whom are now my heavenly angels). My grandmothers and mother guided, raised, taught, instilled and demanded all that I am. My step dad also played an intregal part in my life teaching me many things, especially on a spiritual level. The women in my life (as previously mentioned) were forces to be reckoned with, as such, I have wisdom, respect, strength, knowledge, understanding & unconditional love that is rare. I appreciate & am grateful for the lineage in which I come from. I also have been blessed to meet strong & intelligent women along my journey in life (too many to name, but they know who they are) who have inspired, uplifted and encouraged me. No one goes through life without having at least 1 person who has made a difference in their life for the better. I have been blessed with an entire village! I take no one for granted and truly appreciate and love everyone who has contributed light in my life.
