We had the good fortune of connecting with Yolanda Dowe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yolanda, what do you attribute your success to?
Seeing women embrace and love their natural hair and the changes it undergoes. The success of my brand is fueled by providing reliable and excellent service, flexible hours, affordable pricing, open communication and always addressing questions or concerns with reinforced positivity for a great outcome.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is a natural hair care business which establishes and maintains Sisterlocks® and microlocs on women, men and children. What exactly are Sisterlocks®? Sisterlocks® (founded and created by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell) are tiny uniform locks (sometimes called dreadlocks) formed by using a specific parting grid and the use of a specialized tool to guide the hair into it’s locking formation. They are very similar to interlocking whereas no products are used. The small size and parting grid form about 400 easily styled locks. In order to gain the title of Certified Sisterlocks® Consultant, one has to attend the intense training provided by Sisterlocks® home office and then submit 3 (or more) client interviews and proof of work (new establishment of locks on the entire head). The class itself was overwhelming yet provided a lot of information to start a successful business. In the beginning, this was not an easy task. Gaining the trust of women to change how they normally wear their natural hair, the stigma that can be associated with wearing natural hair, and getting them to trust the process brought about a lot of hesitation and self doubt in the beginning of my business practices. As time went on, I took additional trainings and gained more confidence in my skillset which propelled me to move forward with obtaining new clients and continuing to grow the business. One of the biggest lessons I learned was to be honest with my clients upfront about the expectations of transitioning over to a locked natural hair style. Believe it or not, some people can’t deal with the frizziness that may come with the journey let alone the shrinkage and other changes the hair goes through. By taking progress pictures and showing them the before and after/current status throughout the journey, many come to love their locs. That is the end goal of what I do and why I love it so much. To hear how much freedom they gain from switching over to a loc’d crown, the amount of money they save on products, how healthy their hair becomes and the overall happiness received brings me the greatest joy. I also wore Sisterlocks® for over 11 years so I understand the changes involved and journey as a whole. I want the world to know that I LOVE loc’d crowns and can’t wait to rejoin the community in the near future. “Loc it up, leave it alone and love on ’em!” ~Yolanda

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to a restaurant or two that has good food and live music. Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, St James Live or Ray’s on the River just to name a few. We would also visit Georgia’s aquarium, a museum or two and partake in the culture of Atlanta. My friends and family knows that I love to walk outdoors so they better bring some sneakers. lol Walking in one of Georgia’s many beautiful parks, Krog street tunnel or the beltline to check out the dope art work is a must see.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my growing client based affectionately known as the Frizzy Tresses Tribe. Without their continued support and encouragement, there would be no Frizzy Tresses Studio.
