We had the good fortune of connecting with Yin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I guess that’s a pretty simple answer. We have to. We all started making music long before we formed the band, and if you know anything about pursuing music as a profession, you know it’s extremely difficult to make a living. It’s a lot of being told “not good enough” or “try again”, and the process of making something that you really love is always tough, but the feeling of purpose you get after listening back to a final version of a song that really makes you feel something, is unlike any other feeling. We’re always chasing that feeling and striving to make something that feels important to us.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I guess we can give a little glimpse into how yin came about in the first place. It was’t really on purpose. Connor (guitar) and Jordan (lead vocals) have been in bands together since we were in our early 20’s and have been best friends for a long time. We met Alex (guitar) shortly after Covid hit and the world shut down. Along with that, the music industry kind of collapsed. People were still writing and releasing music, but live music disappeared. We luckily had work that allowed us to keep our heads above the water and we had a ton of free time, so we decided to try and write together and honestly it was this crazy magical thing. We wrote an entire album during that time and what we thought was just trying to find something to do, turned into this really special project.
yin is still objectively a young band. We just put our first record out this past November, so we are still just trying to figure it out. Being in a band is f*cking hard. Like really hard. You pour your entire self into something you really believe in and just hope that it will resonate with someone. (and starting out it feels like no one gives a shit) The music industry has become this really weird and unfortunately dominantly money making monster, for labels and businesses at least, and while making it big and play big sold out rooms is obviously a dream of ours, we really just want to make something that means something to us firstly, and secondly to anyone else. Life’s hard. We try to write about that and give you maybe something to think about.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love this question. This is the best question. Our staples are victory sandwich bar in Inman park. (Great cocktails, great Sammies. yum yom.) Lloyds is another big one. Best dirty martini in the city. Swear. We all live in that area and we have a lot of memories there. We aren’t the biggest “touristy” people so we try and stay from places like ponce city market (except for sweet green, Jordan could eat sweet green for every meal). A few other honorable mentions are Muchacho, Amazza Pizza, Fred’s meat and bread, S.O.S. Tiki Bar, and Gaja and Banshee in EAV.
Outside of food and drinks, we play a lot of tennis and run, so you can catch us on a court somewhere in the city or taking a run on the belt line. If we’re not there we’re locked in the studio cause we literally don’t care about anything else.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
man. there are so many wonderful people that we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with that have been instrumental in helping create art for this band. Josef Mirakovitz, Kyle Dickson, Danielle Dollar, Holden Fincher, Morgan Horne, Andy Kaefer, Austin Hall, all on the production side. They all have been huge parts of helping us with our live show and music videos and have been so incredible to work with. Our beautiful friends Scarlett Oakley and Haley James are the geniuses behind the lens and have captured some really wonderful moments for us.
