We had the good fortune of connecting with Yazid Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yazid, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“The best way to predict the future is to create it” is probably one of my favorite quotes. I have this tattooed down my spine, which was my first and currently my only tattoo. I live by this because I truly believe that you have the power to control and/or create your own future. If you have goals you want to achieve, a lifestyle you want to live, or a specific career goal, you have to be intentional on making that happen — CREATE that future for yourself and work hard at it.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m really proud of Yazid Smith Cosmetics. However, it hasn’t been easy. I don’t think people really share the difficulties and challenges of being a business owner. I thought about putting Yazid Smith Cosmetics on hold after my soft launch. I was not in love with the brand of the business. I didn’t really like the logo, the products — just overall branding. When I participate and/or put out anything that’s mine, no matter what it is, I want to LOVE it and be proud of it. Yes, I was proud that I launched and simply had THE Yazid Smith Cosmetics, but I was not completely happy with the brand. My customers loved the products though. So, I waited until I sold out and rebranded Yazid Smith Cosmetics into something I was more proud of and matched the vibe I was going for — simple and luxurious. Due to me being a perfectionist and just simply loving change and elevating, my brand may go through more changes until I feel I have it “right” — and that’s ok. I say all this to say, running a business is not easy. Do not compare yourself or your business to others. Remember that you are in your own lane. You don’t have any “competition” besides yourself. Things may not be “perfect” now, but you have time. Put your best foot forward and try your best. It’s all a learning experience. Don’t be hard on yourself! With that being said, Yazid Smith Cosmetics will be relaunching later this year, so stay tuned!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

To be honest, it is extremely rare you ever catch me out. I’m a homebody to the core. However, I love taking myself on solo dates to the movies, out to eat, etc. I LOVE the movies! But, I lived in a small town in Georgia called Covington, which is about 30 mins away from Atlanta, almost all my life. So girl, I’m looking for recommendations myself aside from your typical lounge or club. But, I say just be spontaneous and see where the city takes you. There’s so many things to do here that’ll catch any and every vibe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I would like to shed a light on all of the black members of the LGBTQ+ community who are out here being and/or becoming their own bosses. There are so many boss b****es in my community that are doing their big ones! Seeing them succeed in such a world that was conditioned to go against us, not only because of our race but our sexuality, is inspiring to me! They’re opening doors for me, and anyone else that’s up and coming. They’re giving hope and ammunition to those within our community that ever thought it wasn’t possible. Chile, I’m so proud of us! I love seeing us win!
