We had the good fortune of connecting with Wynter McKay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wynter, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
If 2020 has taught me anything, it has put into focus that not only are we are in a season of self-reflection but that we live in a world in need of instant gratification. If your plans have not yet manifested themselves according to a specific timeline, it is considered by some or even yourself as a failure and you may be inclined to give up. Don’t do it! The journey of an entrepreneur is long and just as life can deal out unexpected challenges and is loaded with uncertainty- the beautiful thing about life is that you truly never know what is on the other side of each moment. You may not even realize how close you are to achieving your life’s purpose. Allow yourself a bit of grace and realize that you are exactly where you need to be! And that there are no “rules” to this thing called life. However, should a day come and you have found yourself at a crossroads- as many of us have, do not be afraid to align yourself more closely to with your higher self.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Simply put, beading is for lovers- it is a true obsession. The amount of energy and patience that comes with this handicraft can be quite humbling at times since you are literally building art piece by piece. Bead-weaving offers a versatility that is immeasurable and I have discovered through trial and error that beads are not limited to just jewelry, but can be used to adorn anything from clothing to household decor items. My style is a modernist, minimalistic take on bead design since it has always been my goal to reach those who may be a bit more conservative in their design choices- although I am able to accommodate those who prefer more daring custom pieces. I believe what sets me apart is the fact that I have embraced this art form in every way by not only creating jewelry but also incorporating commonly used items just as glassware and decorative dog collars. The act of creating something by hand and with intent is seemingly rare and at times is lost in a sea of automation. This in itself can be quite challenging at times due to the feeling of wanting to “keep up”, but I just keep going! Beading is my joy and in a sea of the most talented jewelry and art designers, I had the audacity to step into this arena. It’s definitely not easy, but when you discover your passion, your joy- what choice do you have!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Yikes… Atlanta! I mean could you have asked me a more difficult question? The ATL, Hotlanta, Hollywood of the South whatever you want to call it, I love it here! There are so many cool vibes that can be found throughout the city, so depending on your mood you can find yourself exploring the hiking trails in Kennesaw or partying hard at one of our world-famous nightclubs! ATL it’s not just a vibe, the people are just as lovely and reflect a diverse melting pool of both personality and style. But first thing first, I am going to make sure we eat good! Breakfast in Vinings at the Broken Egg Cafe or brunch at South City Kitchen is always a good start- South City has the MOST amazing fried green tomatoes stuffed with Gouda that keep you craving for more. After our bellies are full, we’re heading to downtown ATL, the perfect place especially if you’ve never been to Georgia. The Coca-Cola Factory, Georgia Aquarium, and Centennial Park are all literally within walking distance from each other. You also have the option to ride the Skyview Ferris wheel that gives you amazing views of the city from a birdseye view. If you are not really into the touristy thing, we are headed to the Atlanta Beltline- there we can pick up a couple of bikes and admire the artwork that lines the trails, take a detour to check out the skaters in the Fourth Ward, or stop by Ponce City Market for some lunch and light shopping! Situated on the roof of Ponce City is Skyline Park, it’s loaded with games, rides, and mini-golf in addition to a bar where we can have a quick drink or two before we head off to dinner. Atlanta seriously has so many restaurants it is honestly difficult for me to choose and depends on what side of town you are on. We could have a casual bite at the Slutty Vegan, Marlows Tavern, Tacos & Tequila, Cafe Agora, Fellini’s, or we can get fancy and check out SOHO Atlanta, Steak 101, Canoe, Lure, or The Optimist. After our bellies are delighted, we are going dancing! Hands down the best place if you love music but looking for a true ol’ school ATL party we are heading to MJQ. A little grimey, a diverse crowd, and a mix of music from the 80s to now, it always a good time- just don’t forget to bring cash! I can’t think of a better way to end the day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mother, Vickie! Without hesitation, she is there if I need an extra salesman or simply a soundboard for ideas- but most importantly she continues to be my biggest fan and supporter! Her honesty and journalist background is of immense value but also is the unconditional love that she pours into me daily. Even with her critics, I know that she truly expects nothing in return but my happiness & success. It is a beautiful thing when you have someone who lifts you up and never for a second question’s your dreams. For this, I am forever grateful.
