We had the good fortune of connecting with Wolf Cub Chlo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wolf Cub Chlo, how does your business help the community?
My 5 year old daughter and I went into business at the height of the pandemic. The whole business was started based on how we could help the community and the world as a whole. We experienced a lot of loss and grief during that time. Then, one day she turned to me and said: “mom, I’m tired of seeing people sick and sad and want to find a way to use my brain to make more people smile.” I told her I loved the idea but asked how she intended to do so. She said she could make people laugh by telling silly jokes. So, I asked her to tell me a joke. She had already formulated a couple of jokes to relay and they did make me smile. So, she asked if she could call family members and friends to tell them jokes as well. She even shared jokes with her classmates and teachers virtually. They all enjoyed her jokes. So, she started asking me to write down more and more of the jokes she created as they popped into her brain, and I did. We looked at how many jokes she had come up with and I said: “Chlo, I didn’t realize how many jokes you have! You have enough to write a book!” Then, it was as if a light bulb went off in our brains at the same time. She said, “that’s it! I can put all my jokes in a book to share with as many people as I can to help them smile.” And, that is exactly what we did.
But, I also realized her jokes had an additional advantage. As an English teacher, I noticed a literacy pattern. Her jokes were all puns! She was using witty word play to make people laugh. Not only could the book be used for humor, but it became a great tool for young readers to learn the literacy strategy and overall instill a love for reading.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For me personally, during the day, I am a HS English teacher, which ironically aligns with the Wolf Cub Chlo business. I have been teaching for almost a decade and love connecting with my students, understanding their interests, pain points and strengths BEFORE I even begin teaching content. This is where a lot of teachers struggle, they do it backwards forgetting to realize that they are teaching other humans. Relationships are vital. As a human, you will not invest in anyone who is not invested in you. I invest in my students and always reap the returns and gains. Ofcourse, there are challenges that come with teaching, BIG challenges and politics. It’s tough and every year I say its my last year in the classroom. But, then I always hear touching words from students, receive cards or emails that remind me of WHO I do what i do for and WHY. This is what I instill in my own child and what she in turn wants to instill in the world. That is why my husband and I support her 110%. Her sole mission is to serve and invest in others by helping them laugh or smile, my job is to help her bring that to fruition and provide the data and resources to parents that support her books.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a very very tricky question because we live in one of the greatest cities in the world -NYC. There isn’t just a few places I would want to take you, there’s so much. There’s even places I want to visit because we have lost so many restaurants, theaters and fun places to hang out but there are so many more that have popped up. I guess, its not a specific place I would take my best friend but specific areas. Definitely, Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge Park, Domino Park is also beautiful since it is set on the water and by the bridge. We would eat in EAst Flatbush to experience Caribbean dishes, eat in Willilamsburg to experience other cultured restaurants, Shop in the Village or Midtown. Dance in Times Square. Read in local parks. Sight seeing on top of the Empire State building and ferries by the pier. Go drink hopping all around Brooklyn…the list goes on and on.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We have to shout out our close family and supportive friends who have encouraged us and supported us along our journey. My husband, family members and close friends have supported Chlo’s dream of writing and sharing books with the world. We thank them for giving us the fuel needed to keep pushing.
Our Biggest shout goes to our supporters, those that we recently met, have purchased and followed us because they value our content. They give daily encouragement to keep us going. They are the ones we do what we do for. The goal is to SERVE. The more you keep serving, the more it comes back to you. It’s not all about the money, it’s more about the impact.
