We had the good fortune of connecting with Wilson Joel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wilson, how do you define success?
“Success is not a finite goal, but a lifelong journey of growth and self-improvement. I see success as a dynamic process, where individuals continually adapt, learn, and evolve. My personal definition of success is to consistently better myself, even if just slightly, each and every day. I find inspiration in the idea that there is always room for improvement, and that every experience, no matter how small, offers an opportunity to learn and grow. By embracing this mindset, I strive to make incremental progress, expand my knowledge and skills, and continually raise the bar for myself, perpetuating an upward cycle of personal and professional development.”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I always say to anyone who cares to listen that i am not restricted to a box when it comes to music, I always fly as high as I can with my personality first! Music is a by product of my expression and not the other way round for me.
Talking about my expressions, I refer to how much of a squeeze I can become in a sphere where everyone sees just an ordinary musicianship.
It’s how I carry my music that’s set me apart. I see myself as a business person beyond the art. I don’t just want to play the music, I want the music to play me out.
I always sell the art of music, I don’t get stuck in the art of music. I believe that how you present your music matters more than the music itself.
This is how I got to where I am today. It wasn’t easy but it was well worth it!
I learnt that giving up is a choice, so is keeping at it. As I type I’m still keeping at it.
I see nothing to lose here because taking a rain check on just 2 years ago, the story is different and the recognition is unbelievable.
Today, I am part of the global deciding figures of music. I’m a member of the recording academy and also a peer national associate member of the television academy amongst some other bodies.
Overall, I am glad I never gave up when when I get tired!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely take my guest to the national harbor in Virginia. It has lots of exquisite restaurants and views. I love the ambience and it would be a good fit for any and every guest. My family often visit there too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
“I am eternally grateful to Lanre Oliyide, the extraordinary individual who saw potential in me and nurtured it with unwavering dedication.
In an era where resources were limited, he opened his heart and doors to me, allowing me to sit at his feet and absorb the wealth of his knowledge. With patience and kindness, he showed me the intricacies of music, shared his expertise, and mentored me on the importance of character, ethics, and musicianship.
His unwavering belief in me was the spark that ignited my confidence, and his encouragement still resonates in my heart. When I doubted myself, he saw greatness, and his unrelenting support gave me the courage to pursue my dreams.
Brother Lanre, your impact on my life is immeasurable, and I will forever cherish the gift of your guidance and mentorship. Thank you for being a shining beacon of inspiration and a guardian of my musical journey.”
