We had the good fortune of connecting with Willie Goodwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Willie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
“Calculated risks that make CENSE”. That has always been one of my motos. I took a risk when I first started Good Cense Marketing in 2015 because there were so many big companies in Charleston SC that had huge budgets and could provide more services than a small company like mine just starting out, but I couldn’t let that stop me. I also took another risk in 2016 when I decided to move my small business from Charleston SC to an even bigger city, Atlanta GA. I moved my company because I value growth over comfortability, I didn’t have any family, friends, or even customers in Atlanta when I decided to move. It was hard at first, but I knew I had to hustle and build my clientele. Fast forward to 2021 and I have multiple clients and I’ve even helped run the marketing for the grand opening of a restaurant during a pandemic. Without taking those risks, who knows how my business would have grown. I’m all about risk as long as it makes CENSE.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So currently I’m running two businesses, Good Cense Marketing (www.goodcensemarketing.com) and Cense Clothing Co. (www.censeclothing.co) I’m proud of both businesses and I’m really excited to see both grow this year. I started Cense Clothing Co. in the fall of 2020. This business was a natural expansion of Good Cense Marketing because it expresses the thinking of GCM in the clothing space. I think my company’s ability to understand a business that does not have a multi-thousand dollar marketing budget but does have a great product is what sets us apart. I do look at what a company is doing now, but I like to focus on the future and the potential a company has to grow. Getting to where my businesses are now was not easy. I had to go through not having any clients, getting proposals turned down, moving to a new state and finding a way to grow a clientele from nothing. I always knew it wasn’t going to be easy and that I would have to make sacrifices to get to any sort of success. I’m not where I want to yet, but I’m working daily to improve and provide a better service everyday. I’ve learned many lessons while on this marathon, but one of the ones that stick with me daily is that, you must keep going. Your first post may get 2 likes…keep going, your first year in business you may only sale 5 products….keep going, Freinds and family not seeing the vision?….keep going. Keep going until it makes CENSE.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
