We had the good fortune of connecting with William “Will” Feagins, Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi William “Will”, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m originally from Pittsburgh, PA, the Homewood-Brushton neighborhood to be exact.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is not me, but rather who or what I choose as the subject of my work. It is my intention and desire to highlight people who may be overlooked, who work hard at what they do but often don’t receive the attention they should that sets me apart.

I got to where I am today by working as often and as hard as I can. I learn and improve by doing so I just try to “create” when I feel motivated, even if its not something I eventually share with the public. It hasn’t been easy, especially with the pandemic over the past two years, I’ve put my personal projects on hiatus and turned down a lot of freelance projects. I don’t advertise so I mostly got new clients and projects from referrals but I wasn’t working as much so that slowed down as well.

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned along the way is to be a genuine person and stay true to your word. If you show up and work hard, not everyone appreciates or acknowledges that effort but the right people will and that’s all you need to keep going and growing. Also, get things in writing to cover yourself. lol

I want the world to know that I care about what and who I present to the public and that I believe everyone has a story worth telling, not just high-profile celebrities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve had friends visit Atlanta and we’ve done the tourist-y things like the Aquarium, Piedmont Park, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, The High Museum and Atlantic Station, etc. The places and events I enjoy most are the local, independent art shows at places like Peters Street Station and Future Gallery as well as the local, independent music scene and places like 529, Aisle 5, Apache Cafe and The Masquerade. We also have to hang out in Little 5 Points and East Atlanta Village and get ice cream from Morellis.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my mother and my sisters, I wouldn’t be who I am, specifically as a creative and generally as a person, without them. I’d also like to thank my wife for her support and my creative peers, Adam Smith, Laura Montue, Chris Ivey, Eljay WIlliams, Dr. Arshley Emile, Goldi Gold, Roni Nicole, Brian Price, Mark Eschoe, Ebony Blanding and Michael Moss for their support and inspiration.
