We had the good fortune of connecting with Will Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Will, what do you attribute your success to?
The biggest factor behind my success has been my faith in God and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God gave me a vision in 2014 and I have ran with it in faith ever since. Yes, there were and are practical steps that I’ve had to take, but I have trusted in Him to provide everything I need in the midst of it. Where I am lacking, God has the resources. Where I am weak, God is strong. Having faith in Him gives me the confidence to push through the no’s and the rejections along the way. He can open doors no one can close. Prayer, meditation and building genuine relationships with others have also been key to my current success. In addition to that, I sought to learn the things that I did not know. Whether it was buying a book on that specific subject, talking to a professor at SCAD or watching learned professionals via YouTube; whatever you don’t know about the field you are entering, seek that knowledge and information out. I also utilized the expertise of others who could provide the excellence I could not. For example, though I am the author of Legacy A.D. I am not a great illustrator. Therefore I hired a professional illustrator to complete the artwork that I could not.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been on this journey with Legacy A.D. since 2014. I have learned a lot through this process and I am still learning today. I am thankful and excited about what God is going to do next. Putting my faith into action has been important. Practical steps had to be taken in order for me to get to where I am today. It was also a huge help that I started off with a team that believed in the vision that God has given me. I don’t still have that team currently, but I know that a team is important and will be needed in the future.

If I could give one word of advice, it would be to take chances. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect in order to go to that event, or to do a presentation. Work with what you have. Present excellence in the little things and you’ll be ready to handle more once those opportunities present themselves. Would I like to be further? Yes, but I know that patience, consistency and continued effort have been a proponent to moving forward. Sometimes it can be difficult and discouraging when it feels like things are at a standstill. But whenever I began to feel that way, God would always seem to use someone to encourage me to not give up and help me to remember that I am on the right path. One day the message of Legacy A.D. and its brand will be nationwide, and that message will point others to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My story is one of faith, struggle and obedience. Through my life and Legacy A.D., God will be glorified.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s see, I would take them to a few food spots such as GreedyMan’s Bar B Que & Grill, No Mas Cantina, Bernard’s Po’Boys etc. I’d also take them to the World of Coca-Cola, Atlantic Station, the Civil Rights Museum, a comedy club and maybe a popular lounge.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to send a huge shout out to those who have played an important part in helping Legacy A.D. get to where it is today. Shout Out to Michael Hicks, Harold Nesbitt, LaShanda Johnson, Danje Davis and my wonderful wife Jennifer Smith for her love and support throughout. May God and Jesus Christ be glorified through this project.
