We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Thompkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Whitney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Wow, the financial/insurance world is so much more than I could ever comprehend. I can’t believe there are people living within miles of me who are living lives of total financial freedom. How can I take the information I have learned and make it easy for someone like me to understand?

What should our readers know about your business?
Your Family, Your Legacy, is a life insurance brokerage specializing in cash-growing children’s policies and life insurance for growing policies. There are literally ‘a million’ reasons why someone should purchase life insurance as early as possible, especially for their children. For example, a $100 policy for a 50-year-old can yield a $50K death benefit at age 70. But if a mom took that same $100 and placed it in a policy for a 1-year-old, at age 70, they would be looking at over a million dollars in death benefit. Many parents have no clue. I serve individuals all over the country, educating them on the power of life insurance and pitfalls to avoid, like ‘children’s whole life’!

I’m excited that as of today I have built something I’m proud of. I remember going to an event with other (non-life) insurance agents. When they figured out what I was doing, some said, ‘You want to sell life insurance to our people… Good Luck!’ It was already a tough time in my business, and those words almost took me out. Thank God they didn’t. I am currently licensed in 20 states, and 85% of my clients are ‘my people’! My current success is not because I was lucky, but because I kept showing up. It was so hard making videos no one would watch and sending emails no one would read, but I did it anyway. I knew that I was meeting a need, and personally, I didn’t, and still don’t, think there is anyone better than me to meet it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a blossoming business owner with a two-year-old and a husband. Outside of networking events and conferences, I don’t get out much! There’s a restaurant in Wayne, MI called Avenue American Bistro. Anytime I can find a reason to go, I do!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout-out to my family! Starting a business is tough. I left a well-paying job to face a year with practically no income. My husband, parents, and siblings believed in my vision. Not only did they provide verbal support, but their financial assistance kept a roof over my head, gas in my car, ads running, and so much more!
