Meet Whitney Mitchell | DJ, Hairstylist, and Creative

We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Whitney, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue my career as DJ, mainly because it chose me. But honestly, I have been around music my entire life. Grew up playing piano, and later percussion. Music has taken me to many places, and around many unique , influential people. At the time I chose to officially pursue this new career, I had just finished healing from a broken arm. I could no longer work as a full time hairstylist. So during my physical therapy session, when I would get home, I would get on my drum set for exercise, and play long side my friend that Dj’d. I then asked could he teach me to DJ, and the rest is history. I love the freedom I have as a creative, my own boss, and DJ. Best decision I ever made!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In the music industry there are so many areas you can work from. From producing, rapping, being the DJ, live music instrument playing and etc. I as a creative am fortunate enough to have the skills to do it all. I think that alone is what sets me apart. Just having the skill sets of most, and the knowledge as well. I am able to implement different qualities of each and curate something dope. Whether its a cool sounding dj set, a new mix, or hopping back on the drums during someones set and rocking the night out. I would not be where I am today, if I didn’t practice, bomb sets and cry about it, ask questions, and staying consistent. Another key factor for me was minimizing what no longer served a purpose. That can be with people, and the places I went, and things I did. Keeping close, small amount of people in your circle who do what u do or even better is the key to success. Also having people who genuinely wanna see you grow and be successful.
In the end, I just want to be an example that no matter what you go through, you can and will come out on top, as long as you practice maneuvering and operating in love, being consistent, and setting great intentions.
Lastly, dance and have a great time during my sets!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Of course the first place I would say is OurbarATL on a Sunday night for Karaoke. Mjq on Saturday is my fav for all of my dance lovers. Revery on Thursdays for a cool virtual reality gaming experience and a live dj. Taking a cruise on a scooter or walking with you own two feet on the Beltline is always a go to. My favorite food spots, has to be Thai Sushi, located in EAV, Tacos and Tequila on ponce, and Krogg Street Market of you are indecisive. The concerts and sporting events in Atlanta are one of a kind. Coca-Cola Roxy and “The Battery”, Truist Park, always have events going on. Last but not least, you must check out the Ponce City Market and their rooftop. Atlanta is full of hidden gems and places to go. Just look up and around while you walk or drive.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I most definitely want to give a big thanks to those who have opened their homes, gave advice and establishments to help me become the person I am today as a DJ. Special shoutout to the legendary MJQ, for allowing me to play several times there. From being the dancing queen for many years, to being behind the DJ booth, it was destined. Secondly I love to give a BIG thank you to my first residency, OURBARATL. Started off hosting a trivia night there. We didn’t get as much business doing that, so we brain stormed and said lets try Karaoke. This was during the pandemic, so most bars that allowed karaoke at the time were closed. We figured this was the best opportunity to gain a following. We followed all health and safety guidelines with masks, and sanitation. Now, 2 years later, we have one of the best karaoke nights in Atlanta. It has also allowed me to debut my turntable skills, gain a following, and more opportunities around the city and the world. For that, I am grateful.
