We had the good fortune of connecting with WENQI SUN and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi WENQI, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Actually, I was sure that I wanted to pursue this when I was in high school. Because I found that I was always attracted to new things and curious. I loved voraciously learning about all kinds of crafts and making online, especially all kinds of remodeled pendants and costumes, and that started my interest in clothing. Also, I’m not expressive, so I like to keep my view of the world to myself. But when I began studying art, I found that art and creative careers allowed me to express myself uniquely. Whether through painting, design, or other mediums, I can create unique pieces that convey the thoughts and emotions I am myself. Also, when I complete a work of art or creative project, I get a unique sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that makes me repeatedly fall in love with the field.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Although I am only a recent college graduate now, in the future, I hope I can become a fashion designer. I love quirky and outlandish designs, so my designs are often asked by my friends, “Who wears this out? But I don’t mind that. I think it’s a way for me to express my approach. At the same time, clothing is not as important to me as practicality; it just needs to look good and make a visual impact. Initially, I wasn’t that bold, so I started with the idea that “clothing should look like clothing,” which was very limiting. As time passed, I started to hate this feeling of constraint, so I tried to get myself into a state of mind by letting go before designing so that I could begin to design regardless.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I don’t live in Atlanta. I’ve only been here a few times during the holidays. First of all, I would recommend the Atlanta History Center because I think if you want to understand the city, you need to start with the history. And this museum showcases Atlanta’s history and culture, including exhibits and historical buildings from the American Civil War. Next is the World of Coca-Cola Museum. Coke is a common drink, but its history and development are also very interesting. If you learn about marketing and design, as I did, you will get a lot of inspiration
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, of course, is my mom and dad. Because without their financial and moral support, I wouldn’t have had the courage and grit to keep pushing forward. Although they are not from this field, and sometimes can’t fully understand my design, they respect and constantly support me in doing what I want. Secondly, my senior collection professor- Andrew Fionda, made my college life perfect. Because I was not a very confident person before the senior collection, let alone competing in anything. But he always encouraged me and told me, “You can do it” and “You’re doing great,” which gave me confidence. In addition, he recommended we participate in many fashion competitions, which allowed me to win one of the ten finalists in the Pierre Cardin Young Designer Competition. This win gave me confidence, made me feel that I was not as bad as I thought, and gave me more courage to try.
