We had the good fortune of connecting with Wavee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wavee, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I have a habit of criticizing my work because of a desire for perfection. I remember when I first started to record my own music, some people use to straight up tell me they didn’t like it or that “it’s not it… .” Some people saw the potential in my music but I wanted to make sure everyone took a liking to my music. I would compare my journey to MJ early in his career trying to make the team. I hated when people didn’t like my music and it gave me motivation to spit harder and structure my music like actual songs. That was another thing I hated hearing, that my music wasn’t structured like an actual song. So I did just that. I managed to be able to talk my shit, make the song bounce, and make it a song. I knew it was a wrap once I mastered that.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is unique. The main thing that sets me away from others is my hard work and versatility. I got to where I’m at by way of blood, sweat, and tears. This journey was not easy at all. One of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way is to “invest in yourself.” For instance, content! Making content probably keeps me the busiest. That’s because I have more than just music to present to the world. Besides being an artist, I act and model. They all fall under the same umbrella, in a sense because I can Incorporate them all into a single project. I have the luxury of keeping myself relevant between project drops. That forces me to work harder than the average artist, I end up overwhelmed with ideas.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would probably start out in Brooklyn and hit Suede for food, it’s a fire carribean spot in east Flatbush. The music is great and they’re not stingy on the alcohol amount in the drinks. Next we’d travel to the city to hit a club called Doux, or maybe TheDean. We’ll dance maybe, maybe I have my music played, have a couple drinks then make our last stop in Queens to “Stiami.” My boy owns the club, it’s probably the hottest spot in Queens.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is for everyone in my circle that influences the quality of my product. This is everything from my music to appearance. But if I had to pick someone to give a shout-out to, it would be my boy Derrick, this is my brother from the sandbox. When I first started to record in a studio I didn’t have bread to pay for the sessions, and my boy use to pay for my sessions. When I say I didn’t waste a min of my time. I use to record 4 or 5 songs at a time. I came to the studio ready. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I owe him, I got him when I dot that line, he “knows the count.”
