We had the good fortune of connecting with Von and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Von, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind my clothing brand Freer, was to create a brand that encourages others to live freely despite societal norms. I truly believe that each of us can think of something at any given time that makes us feel “free”. What I want to do through my clothing brand is to bring awareness to whatever that may be and encourage you to do more of that.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The most exciting thing about being a creator is seeing things with your real eyes that began as a thought in your minds eye. Also, it’s super exciting to see and hear the reactions of others when they get a chance to see or experience what you have created.

I’d like to say that I’ve always been a creator for as far as I can remember. I am also a creator of music in the sense that I have written and produced lots of music for myself as an artist throughout the years. Transitioning from music to clothing wasn’t very hard being that they go hand and hand.

However, it’s not always easy being a creator because oftentimes the mind of a creator is far more complex than say an “average thinker”. Sometimes you want to go way left with you ideas but have to pull those thoughts in to more simple ideas just so others can understand your concepts. You just have to give people small doses at a time and that can be a challenge. But nevertheless, it all comes together in the end.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned since running a clothing brand is to be consistent and be fearless.

I ultimately want to use myself and my clothing brand to push the message of loving oneself, self-expression and living a life of freedom.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The city itself is my favorite spot in the city! Being a free-spirited individual, I have a thing I like to call “Spontaneous Saturday’s”, which is when I get up on a Saturday, get dressed, get into my car, drive, and find the most random things going on that day. I may find a new restaurant that I’ve never eaten at before as well. There’s never an itinerary, I just go! It’s so fun!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my parents for loving and supporting me. Nearii and Kyla for the ongoing support especially during the early stages. Ambrose, Toy, Janessa and all of my family and supporters that jumped on board very early even though I barely knew what I was doing. Their support really helped me to keep going especially during difficult times. All my people at God Is Dope that played a part in helping me gain the knowledge I needed to grow and expand my company. Most importantly, my customers who continue to support the brand day in and out.
