We had the good fortune of connecting with Vinessa Dickson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vinessa, how do you think about risk?
The success of my business is the result of me taking a risk. I believe, as an entrepreneur, you have to make sacrifices and take risks in order to stay uncomfortable. As long as I make sure I don’t get comfortable or content with where my business is, at any moment, then I know I’ll keep progressing. I look at any risk that I take like it is me betting on myself. As long as I bet on me, then I can’t lose. I am constantly thinking about what I can do next to elevate my business and my life. Not only am I thinking, but I’m also creating a plan to execute any ideas that I have. Before my mindset changed, I was scared to take any risks because I didn’t know what the outcome would be. Once I realized that being scared was the result of me not having faith in myself or my ideas I knew I had to change the way that I think. Once I did that, I was able to take the risk I needed in order to build my business to where it is today. Like the late and great Nipsey Hussle has said, “forget being basic, I’m taking risks!”
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a master cosmetologist and professional braider. I go by @superstarstylus on social media, and some of my clients call me Superstar or Star. My business name is The Star Look, LLC. I want all my clients to feel and look like superstars when they leave my chair. Everyone deserves The Star Look! I started my brand in early 2019 and was able to thrive and build during the 2020 pandemic. My professionalism, excellent customer service skills, and quality of work sets me apart from the rest. I’m most proud of my work ethic. I’m a natural procrastinator, but was able to push through and stay dedicated to doing the work. I’m excited about building The Star Look’s brand. I’m currently working on a few endeavors that I’m both excited about and proud of. I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since 2011, but 2020 was my break out year. It took me 9 years to get focused and figure out how I could stand out in the hair industry. I had to learn the formula to building my clientele. I realized the importance of social media content and the quality of photos and videos I posted. I promoted my business no matter what. It was difficult at times, but I knew I had to keep pushing. I had to overcome the difficulties by not quitting on myself. I’ve learned that consistency, working on a schedule, taking risks, setting goals, and putting in the work is the key to building success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would have brunch and mimosas at Milk & Honey or Fin & Feathers. We would visit downtown Atlanta to experience the city, including Centennial Olympic Park and The Georgia Aquarium. We’ll have to go to JJ’s Fish on Wesley Chapel Rd. for a fish and shrimp plate. We’d have to go to any wing spot in the metro Atlanta area for a 10 piece mild with lemon pepper sprinkled combo, with fries and a peach lemonade drink. For nightlife experience, we’ll go to an adult entertainment spot like Magic City, Strokers, or Blue Flame. If we want more nightlife fun, we’ll go to an after hour spot like Tappas in Lawrenceville or Ghost Bar in Edgewood.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my clients! They are the real MVPs! They are the reason why I am able to pursue my career. I am so grateful for them.
