We had the good fortune of connecting with Vienna V. Rose Da Re and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vienna V. Rose, how do you think about risk?
Everything I do feels like a risk sometimes, especially in my line of work. I decided to become a musical artist/singer-songwriter at the age of 6 but I had no idea what that meant in business at that age, understandably. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I experienced major success and failure in my career. It was heartbreaking to face the reality that what deemed incredible to me might not always translate that way to the world. I definitely went through a period of time where I struggled in risk-taking because of that. Putting out a song that didn’t top the charts or wasn’t a fan favorite shook me up and made me afraid for a while but it also gave me a chance to face the fear of rejection. I started working on honing my craft even more but I also started to feed my faith and read about famous artists that I knew of like Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde and Emily Dickinson, (to name a few) who were not beloved in their lifetime but became known long after they were gone. This played a huge role in changing my mindset and I realized that everything I create is in fact incredible, despite the public opinion, because it is my God given gift and ability. When I made the album ‘Forth’ in 2019 I was terrified to make music on my own again after having so much support from labels in my past but something in me knew I had to do it because this is what I was created to do and if it failed publicly, it would still be a success inwardly. I have since become comfortable with risk-taking because I know now that road to success truly is paved with failures.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a full time artist, singer-songwriter mostly. I absolutely believe what sets me apart is my voice. Not just sonically because many people compare me to outstanding vocalist like Jo-Jo and Tori Kelly to name a few, but I believe it is the voice in my writing that sets me apart. I write from my heart and of my own experience. I started going to therapy for a while in my teen years but I hated talking about my life even in a safe space. My therapist recommended that since I was a song-writer, that I try and write about it in my music. I didn’t know then but that advice changed everything for me. I get countless DM’s and emails from people who have since been impacted by the things I write about in my music. One major theme is always present and that is that people tell me they feel seen by what I express. It hits deep to be completely honest. I never knew people would relate to what I was going through or experiencing and it still blows my mind and lights up my heart when I read those messages.
I got where I am today in my professional career because I never gave up! lol.. I trust God and I know that as long as I return to Him what I have been given, He will honor that and continue to bless it. Every opportunity that I have is because of God working in my life it really hasn’t been easy. There were times I was robbed of opportunity because someone made a call and blocked me from being played on radio stations. There were times I was robbed of money and resources that were mine because I trusted people to do right by me and they didn’t. I have had to start over again and again with the hope that things will get better and not everyone is bad and out to get me.
I have learned so much about people and about myself through all of it. I learned that people are just that, people! Capable of failing you or robbing you but also that there are people who are capable of helping you and loving you. People want to be seen and heard and so did I. The most valuable thing I have learned is to understand boundaries. What they are and how to use them in every relationship, professional and otherwise. A good friend of mine taught me to put people in two categories; One, people who are takers and two, people who are givers, This is gold! When my phone rings, I ask myself what category is this person in and do I have space to give to them if they are a taker and I almost always answer the phone to ones who are givers in my life.
One last thing I’ll mention about what I’ve learned is that you are absolutely a product of your environment and the company you keep so choose your friends wisely and surround yourself with things, experiences and people who will push you to do better and be better.
I would love for the world to know my brand as a safe space. A space that you can come and enjoy music that will uplift you and also make you feel seen and that all stems from my personal relationship with Jesus.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first place I would take my friend is to eat at Slutty Vegan because they make incredible vegan food that doesn’t taste like lettuce, lol. We would then go to a Hawks game at State Farm Arena because I loveee basketball and it’s always a great time. On another day I would take them to ride scooters and shop along the belt line then later enjoy sundown around there at Estrella/ Bazati which features a gorgeous 1920’s french vibe downstairs and a fancy rooftop upstairs. We would totally be found thrifting at chains like Plato’s closet and Uptown Cheapskate on several other days because you can find amazing, even signature pieces at places like those and it is also a great place to shop for essentials. We would have to see a movie at the Silverspot Cinema located at The battery because it is a dine-in theater and food is always a must when seeing a movie these days. I would also take them to visit my small group on a Wednesday morning north of Atlanta and introduce them to some of my closets friends who run a ministry specifically for creatives called Oasis. We would also have to drive through the city and the backroads because that is one of my favorite pass times and Atlanta and its trees are a must see to truly get a feel for the city although you really can’t miss the trees just about anywhere you go. If it were summer time, we would play tennis at Piedmont park and visit the Botanical Gardens and then get lemonade and fries at Dwarf House. I love escape rooms so I always make people go to one. The Escape Game located at the Battery Atlanta is a must go! Lastly we would spend an entire day hiking at Sawnee Mountain Indian Seat Trail because I have always wanted to hike there but havn’t found many takers haha.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out an artist by the name of Melinda Watts. She played a huge role in my career starting at the age of 15. Melinda was then a high school english teacher but would leave work and come over to give me vocal lessons. I look back now and see that what she did for me was so much more than that. Melinda taught me to be confident and stand behind what I write and that when I step up to the mic to not be afraid but to be bold. I remember an event we both sang at in a park out in the bay area in California and the group I was a part of then messed up during our set and we were humiliated. Melinda wrote us a note and passed it to us before she took the stage. The note said to remember that everything we do is unto God and no matter how many times we fall we must always choose to get up and start again. She taught me that it was okay to fall and I have never forgotten that through my many failures and mess-ups that came along the way. She is truly someone I admire and look up to still to this day and I am very grateful for her mentorship at an age I desperately needed it.
