We had the good fortune of connecting with Victory Perdomo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victory, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always got bored quickly with fast food and retail jobs. When COVID hit, I decided to dedicate my time to something not only long-term, but beneficial to many more than just myself (and of course it doesn’t hurt that I get to live on my own terms).
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This journey has been everything BUT easy. For the first 2 years, I bounced around between “regular” jobs and side jobs trying to make extra money to fuel mg business. Eventually I realized all of my time and energy needed to be put into myself and my passion. That’s when things finally started looking up. When I first began in 2020, I had a total of 7 products in my inventory. With my upcoming rebrand, I’ll have 14 being restocked and I’m introducing 5 new products (all self-maintenance including skin care, hair care, and spiritual care). On top of that, I NEVER had intentions of becoming a loctician. Someone asked me to style their locs one day, I posted it, and it was up from there. The more I did it, the more I fell in love with dreadlocks and their maintenance. What makes me stand out the most in the loc business is the fact that I twist to the left, as opposed to the majority twisting to the right. They will try to tell you it’s not right, but consistency is what’s important.
The two biggest things I learned since starting are PATIENCE and CONSISTENCY; two things I never took seriously until I really had to.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m new to the 757 area, but my favorite place to go so far is the beach OBVIOUSLY (being that I’m a Florida girl and all 😋). There are many black owned shops in the area as well, like Utopia Feni and Conscious Planet where they host open mic nights and showcase so much black talent!! Please don’t think I’m basic but my favorite food spot so far is America’s Best! They’re wings are TOP TIER 🤤
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother deserves far more flowers than I when it comes to Melanin Tendencies. Every time I thought I couldn’t do it, she reminded me why I started and what can come from this. She’s been my investor, mentor, financial advisor, bookkeeper, and any other type of assistant I’ve needed over the past 3 years. She is truly my rock.
