We had the good fortune of connecting with Vicky Jocelin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vicky, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is that if you put all your values in money, you will forever be broke. ReForum Consulting was founded with the $110 state filing fees and the generosity of our social capital. My partners and I, leveraged our photographers, graphic designers, disc jockeys, website developers, event space coordinators, and former and existing partners to help us develop and become the brand we are today. With the value placed on human connections, and not the lack of financial capital, we launched a fully operational business within months. Our social capital catapulted our business from conception to inception.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
ReForum Consulting founders and facilitators are Javonia Smith, LMSW, MCJ, Vicky Jocelin, LMSW and Ti-Me Gadsden, MSOL. Reforum Consultings’ purpose and passion is to pave the way and blaze a trail to empower and engage all individuals to manifest the best version of self. Our talents, gifts and skills are used to uplift and inspire, as we break the stigma associated with mental illness while simultaneously offering and exploring the spectrum of wellness. Through facilitation and education we share our wisdom with the world, working together to add the “WE” in wellness. ReForum Consulting operates from the knowledge that achieving greatness is not easy; working in spite of adversities, is integral when working to separate vision from execution. With similar professional backgrounds, our differences in experience with various populations, settings, management styles, and team dynamics has created a unique opportunity for our work. The social impact that Reforum envisions is a culture that focuses on social and emotional work, exploring the impact it has on individuals and the larger community. Can you imagine a society where differences were acknowledged, empathy and self-awareness were emboldened, and people were SEEN and HEARD? We can!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in New York City, equates to living in the most vibrant, eclectic, diverse, bustling city in the world. There is nothing short of fun, free activities to satiate even most rigid palate. Visiting New York means trying cuisines from around the world. I would visit Zanmi, on Monday for an authentic Haitian meal in Brooklyn accompanied by sounds of Haitian music. BKLYN Prime or El Jeffe for tacos and margaritas, on a Tuesday. On Wednesdays, we love the fusion of Caribbean cuisine and Asian fusion at Caribbean Social, not to mention ladies night fun. Thursdays, we would have to do a sophisticated after work event at Saavy Bistro, for drinks, dinner and dancing. Fridays, we would do a relaxing wine down at Body by Brooklyn Spa. While we eat our way to the city, we would check out galleries in the city such as Gotham Galleries or Mocada, free museum days, and finally no NYC trip is complete without a subway ride which may display a free show of pure talent.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There so many people that we would like to thank who has gifted us with their services, talents, skills, and support. Ranging from attending our events, reposting our social media posts, taking our headshots, developing our website, developing marketing strategies, providing us space to host our events, and guest speakers, we are forever indebted too you. We would look to like to thank some of the most integral and invaluable persons that have assisted in the inception of ReForum Consulting. Kye, Sam, Athena, Mary, Shamel, Erica, Anne-Kenya, Alana, Jeff, David, Sheldon, Rebecca, Nakisha, Emily, P. Williams, Brittany, Aaron, Jamie, Andre, Ayanna, and Jessica.
