We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Williams-Crenshaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veronica, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Balance has been something that I have struggled with my entire life. I used to be one to pour out to everyone and everything with nothing left for myself. When my mental and physical health started to be effected, I knew I had to make a change – QUICK. For me it started with a daily 5 minute meditation to an entire 30 minute morning self care routine. I routinely take time to pamper myself – whether a massage or manicure/pedicure- and I make time to work out and eat better. When I became a mom, my kids became a priority. Making time for them was critical. I learned to set boundaries at work and in my personal life to make time for myself and my family. I am cognizant of the balance and can now tell when I’m off balance so I can pivot and make the necessary changes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Currently I serve as a special education director for a virtual charter school in Georgia. Outside of work, I serve on the board for a math, science, and arts focused charter school, Atlanta SMART Academy. I am an active member of the Junior League of Atlanta, currently serving as a placement chair and Board Bank Chair. Prior to working at the district level, I taught 6th grade English for 6 years. I attended Fisk University for undergrad and obtained my law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. Having had a strong desire to work in education, I made the decision to become a corp member with Teach for America in Birmingham, AL. After completing my corp term, I remained in education. I pursued other opportunities to advocate for necessary change in education. As a fellow with Leadership for Educational Equity, I have been able to learn and grow my advocacy skills to push for policy that supports minority students and the barriers they face. My trajectory has been a “learn on the job” experience. My passion for kids of all ages and education has been the driving force behind my development and success. One thing that I have learned along the way is that you are always learning – take every opportunity as a chance to grow. Secondly, make friends wherever you go! I want the world to know that my story is just beginning! I want to be a voice for those who are not usually apart of the conversation. I want my legacy to be one of perseverance, unity, and action!
