We had the good fortune of connecting with Vernon P. Davis Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vernon P., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Since I was 13, I have been enamored with the concept of working for oneself. As I got older and experienced life I came to realize that working for oneself is amazing as long as you have customers that purchase your product or service. For years I struggled with the challenge of having something to offer that would benefit those that bought it. Once I began seeing progress in my health after making lifestyle changes in route to reversing the type 2 diabetes I was diagnosed with, I accepted the opportunity afforded to me by God. I created my publishing company with the intention of writing and releasing a book on how I healed my body naturally of type 2 diabetes with no medication, as well as contract myself out as a speaker. Long term I desire to have created something I can leave to my children to oversee and push forward.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My Amazon #1 New release, “Uncomfortable Peace: Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone to Naturally Beat Type 2 Diabetes” is my first book but certainly not my last. It was a tough journey to not live and experience but to also document and format to tell the story effectively. I wrote this to help decrease the statistics related to not only type 2 diabetes but all chronic illnesses that are a result of poor lifestyle choices. I remember that “end of the world” feeling upon being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I know others could feel something similar should they be diagnosed with it as well. I now have an available resource for others to view and reflect upon in efforts to improve their health. Being told what to do is one thing but reading about someone having done it and succeeded is impactful and meaningful. What sets my book and story apart from many others is the fact that not only did I take ownership of my health but I also did extensive research on what was going to be best for my body longterm and was able to heal my body and organs without any prescription medication.

Going through this experience was by far the most challenging event of my life. I was terrified that my organs would shut down on me. I was timid to leave the house not knowing if my vision would remain intact so I could make it home safely. I was fearful of going out to do simple daily tasks with the understanding that I was constantly feeling numbness throughout my body and wondering at what point would it be permanent. For all these fears and more, having the support of my wife, family and friends really carried me to where I am today. Two of my friends are my accountability partners and their roles are equally as important in my progress and the obstacles I have overcome. With them, I received consistent encouragement and words of wisdom in caring for my body in route to the reversal goal that I had. Mr. Lee is very knowledgeable in physical fitness and his expertise allowed me to lose 50 pounds from working out via video chat on my patio. Brione exposed me to natural herbs and sea vegetables and their benefit to the body. My doctors visits were all exciting the first 9 months after my diagnosis. I saw improvement each time and was happy to have the doctors all express their initial disappointment with me having declined the use of medication, only for them to followup with how proud they were of the changes I made without using medication as the results spoke for me.

Writing this book as well as having lived the experience, I learned that nothing is impossible. Even though we may not know how to do something, we have the ability to research and figure it out. Most of the times we have access to someone that has done or attempted to do what we are trying to achieve thus we are able to seek mentorship from them or others in route to our own success. I learned that what I eat and put in my body has a direct connection to every area of my life. For everything that I have experienced as it relates to having become an author and writing my first book, I accept that these experiences allow me to standout in relation to my peers that have written great books and/or speak to others about various topics for a living. Professionally, I aspire to be personable and relatable as what I have to say and write about not only is helpful for the 30 plus million americans with type 2 diabetes, but also for those faced with challenges and dreams that they want to overcome or achieve.

Davis Family Publishing is here to stay, we strive to collaborate with other entities so that we can all succeed together. I know for a fact the information in my book is beneficial to MILLIONS of citizens. With knowing that, I offer a 70/30 profit split for venues that host book signing events for me. Venues that accept this proposal are typically on the same page with seeing others improve their health and quality of life (healthy dining establishments, juice bars, gyms/fitness centers, barbershops and salons). I have not seen other authors offer something like this, i know it emphasizes one of our goals to “win together”. We are currently partnered with International Federation of BodyBuilders Professional Athlete Darcell Francois aka “Swoll Francois”. This God-ordained partnership was very strategic as it features Mr. Francois and myself, two men on different ends of the physical fitness spectrum but we share the same goal: assisting others in their quest to being the best version of themselves physically; from the common man or woman looking to improve their health and appearance or to others looking to achieve professional status as a athlete. We both have beneficial information available to share. For those that receive it, they will not only see positive change in the areas of their life they seek change but they will experience significant change in their overall life.

As it relates to my story, I want others to know that it can be theirs as well. My story although, health related, focuses on the need for accountability partners, taking time to educate oneself, showing grace to oneself, persevering and advocating for “me”. It is challenging and not everyday is perfect but longterm, success is there to be had. The strides in my health that I have made are far greater than the 50 pounds I lost in 5 months or the 10 points I dropped in my A1C level in 16 months. What I was able to do from the comfort of my home helped in my self-confidence, emotional intelligence, mental and spiritual health as well; so much of my life was a reflection (good or bad) of my physical health and all that aided in its current status. Understand that where I am is not the end but merely the middle as I aspire to press towards optimal health for myself while being a catalyst for others to achieve that same status in their lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Should my best friend come to town, each morning we are up at 4:30am getting ready to workout at a local gym. No way around it, For 30 minutes we will go through a regimen my trainer has already put me through and we will cheer on each other until we finish. After we finished and get cleaned up breakfast is made at home and it relaxation until we step out in the afternoon. There are a number of great eateries, one day would would visit Chef Skips in Va Beach, another day its off to Suffolk to get a taste of Ryans Steaks and Cakes and lastly we would have to visit Aberdeen Barn in Virginia Beach/Norfolk All other meals would be made at home as I am very conscious about what I eat and how often I eat out. I only drink water, which I take everywhere I go, however there is a bar at Dave & Busters my bestfriend would be welcome to. While enjoying a game of pool and their drink I am sure at Dave & Busters we are able to catch up a bit on life, our businesses and families. Lastly before the week ends, a trip to Busch Gardens is needed, to enjoy the thrills of an amusement park.

I am a very laid back person, I am primarily about my family, friends and company. I put all of my energy into those things as well as my personal development, knowing that everything else is not going anywhere. My friends are the same, we enjoy family friendly places like amusement parks and the aquarium.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today with the assistance of my friend & business partner, Tony Lee as well as my friend & herbalist, Brione Reid, of www.Godlyherbs.com
