We had the good fortune of connecting with Velitra Murray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Velitra, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because it’s simply who I am. I remember telling my father when I was a little girl that I wanted to be an artist when I grow up but I never knew I would become a makeup artist. Having the ability to create is a beautiful thing that I believe is overlooked at times. I love being creative. Whether it’s a new look for a client or a DIY project, I thrive when I can take an idea out of my head and actually see tangible.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a professional makeup artist based in metro Atlanta. I help women build confidence by improving their personal image through makeup artistry. I’m most proud of being able to serve grieving families with my gift of creativity. I love performing makeup and hairstyling services for the deceased because it’s important to me how their loved ones remember them during that delicate time of loss.
I got to where I am today professionally by prayer and taking leaps of faith. I worked for the United States Postal Service for 11years before becoming a full time makeup artist. During that time learned so much about how to run a business, being dedicated and efficient. I knew I wanted to become an entrepreneur but I also needed personal development, a plan and faith. It wasn’t easy leaving my comfortable government job but I knew that I was too talented to continue selling postage for a living while my inner artist was on the verge of dying. It was challenging to make the transition but I decided that I would do whatever I had to do to make it work. I made and sold gift baskets and roses to supplement my income, I drove Lyft and Uber to make things work until I landed a job with Mac Cosmetics and started doing what I love professionally. With that I am able to work my business as a makeup artist as well as work as a Mac artist. I’ve learned not to ever give up on my dreams no matter how long it takes to happen. I have also learned that circumstances might not look like what we expect them to look like but they will lead you right to where you need to be. I want the world to know that through faith in God anything is possible! Dreams you thought would never happen are still possible. My brand is an example of that truth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely hit up a really good Mexican restaurant or two. lol I would absolutely find something outdoorsy and adventurous to do. I’d take my friend somewhere we can hang out and have fun. Possibly an arcade or escape room. I truly don’t know the names of many places here in Atlanta. I’ve been here almost two years but I don’t get out too much lol
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I met a complete stranger by way of YouTube a few years ago. This woman has become such a great friend and sister to me. Felicia Winstead or “Boss Lady Fe” has been such a great inspiration to me and so many others. Felicia has mentored many people as well as myself. She encourages me to believe in myself and never give up! Felicia started an online gift basket community via YouTube where she has connected business owners and gift basket creators from all across the world. She has inspired, uplifted and empowered so many people to start their own businesses and try again at businesses that may have been prematurely given up on. Felicia is an entrepreneur, content creator, spiritual leader and so much more! She has definitely made an impact on my life and the lives of so many.
