We had the good fortune of connecting with Vaughn Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vaughn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Generational wealth! My goal is to build a career cutting hair, venture off into other businesses and build wealth in my family name. I was working at Menards in 2017 as a cart pusher. One day i had a break down at work, overwhelmed from school, work & family problems. I could only think of one thing that would make things better for me, which was more income. I wrecked my brain trying to figure out what i could do to legally make money. I finally came up with cutting hair. I did it a couple times before, and i figured practice would make perfect. I jumped head first into the barber life and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have been cutting hair since 2014, in 2017 i decided to make it a business. Until 2019 i worked and cut hair on the side while still attending school. In 2019, i graduated from Ferris state. In 2020 I quit my job to cut hair full time. Last year i was cutting hair in my house, charge $15 for a haircut. Now I am working at one of the best barbershops in Detroit, Juice barbershop; and i charge $50 a haircut. I think what sets me apart from other barbers is my passion and drive for learning more. A lot of people in the barber industry reach a point where they are content and they stick with what they know. I’m always studying my craft, learning different techniques and styles of cutting hair. I got to where I am by having persevering through the struggle of becoming a entrepreneur. There were many times i wanted to quit and just work for someone. I knew the only way i could build wealth in my family was by working for myself. It wasn’t easy, it took a lot of trial and error but it’s worth it. Working 80 hours a week for yourself is better than working 40 hours for a company. Honestly, I’m still overcoming the challenges of entrepreneurship because it’s never ending. There’s always more to be done, a problem to be fixed or knowledge to be learned. I learned to roll with the punches. I want the world to know that Saucey Cuts will continue expand, and will eventually become a household name in the barber industry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In the city of Detroit it’s so much to do, good and bad. If i had a friend visiting the city, i could definitely put them hip to a couple hot spots in the city. I love to eat at Captain Jays, Asian Cornbeef, Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles, L George’s Coney Island, and Bucharest. I don’t go out to often but Bar 7 and views bar and grille are hot spots in the city. I’m honestly a workaholic/homebody. So i think the best place to hang out is at Juice barbershop with 15+ staff members we have. Everyday at work is a great time! We even have The Spice Rack food truck that pulls up and makes some of the best food you’ll taste in the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe my success to God and my mother. My mom raised me as a single mother and did the best she could to keep me out of trouble and make sure I was educated. Also, a big shoutout to my fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated for pushing me to be a better man!
