We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Mius and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valerie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was wanting to turn my hobby into a living because of how passionate I was about making cakes. I remember when I was a child my grandmother used to always bake and she would bake from scratch. That got passed on to my mother and then to me. I even have her old recipe book that I still use from time to time. I always knew I wanted more for my name than just working and building someone else’s company.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Valleys of cake started in September 2017. I was sitting at my desk, at work and I decided that I no longer wanted to work for anyone anymore and put my 2 week notice in that same day and registered for my LLC at that very moment. I started off of the strength of my faith. I didn’t know where it was going to go but I knew it was what I wanted to do. Valleys of cake is a company that makes everything from scratch, that is what I would say separates us from the rest. We are a scratch baking company. Having faith and trusting the process is never easy, yet 4yrs later and we are still here and have now located in two states, Florida and Atlanta. Overcoming the challenges requires a lot of failing and getting back up to make it happen. My sister pushed me a lot. I remember nights fulfilling a cake order and just wanted to give up mid way and I would call my sister to come over and she would get me together real quick and assist me and we would do the damn thing. That’s how she became my partner. The lessons I have learned along the way is to trust the process. Do not rush. Do not compare your business to anyone else’s business because everyone has a time to shine and if you stay the course and remain focused, your time to shine will come.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to do all of the off the wall things, or that’s what some of my friends would call it. I call it adventurous. I would definitely take them to the City Pass. The city pass includes the aquarium, Coca-Cola factory, football hall of fame, CNN tour, the zoo and so much more. Definitely the botanical garden. We would get on the Ferris wheel and visit MLK house. I like to get all the site seeing things out the way. Now time to have fun!! Edgewood would definitely be a stop. There are so many restaurants, lounges and great vibes out that way. As for food, I’m googling and checking for reviews, lol. I’m new to the city of Atlanta so I’m still using google for everything. With that being said we are definitely going out to brunch. Brunch here is amazing. BQE, VVS, Fins & Feather and so many more brunch spots, count us in.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my partner/sister Jasmine Mius for being the best partner anyone can ask for. Shoutout to my bestfriend/life coach Dennis Pritchard for saving me when my mental needed saving. And lastly, my mother for always supporting my dreams no matter which way I may go.
