We had the good fortune of connecting with Valencia Weaver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valencia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Initially, I was not concerned with starting my own business. I just wanted to write short children’s stories based on the likeness of my granddaughter. However, the many books I wrote thrush me into opening my own children’s book business. Once I realized I had a vision for my stories and a genre that I wanted to write about, it made it easier for me to develop my business plan.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been a registered nurse for over thirty-five years, a nurse practitioner for fifteen years, and a military trauma nurse for over eleven years. My nursing career was not easy. I’ve always had to work harder than the average nurse to be recognized or advanced in my nursing career. I have worked three-four jobs to make ends meet as a single parent for twenty-five years. I worked in various roles of leadership as a registered nurse. I don’t depend on others because I never had others I could rely upon to help as I navigate life. I’ve overcome challenges by seeking higher degrees to promote within the field of nursing and my military career. A lesson I learned in life is that no one will give you anything; you have to work for what you want and that the table you want to sit at does not always want you there. I’m at this point in life; I don’t want to sit at a table where I am not wanted. So, I will create my table and invite others to the table.
I have written children’s stories(Wynter Skye Series) based on my family, with my granddaughter being the central character.
The Wynter Skye series is a collection of short African American children’s stories that are fun, imaginative, relatable, and fascinating. The stories will inspire, teach lessons, and gives all races a better understanding of African Americans’ family life experiences. The main character is a two-year-old female named Wynter Skye. She has a doll named Summer Rayne, that is her best friend. Both will share adventures, explore the world together, and make you laugh and cry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my guest to Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic site on Monday, Georgia Aquarium on Tuesday, Coco Cola Museum on Wednesday, Tyler Perry Studios on Thursday, play at Fox theater on Friday, a movie or museum on Saturday, and church on Sunday. Regarding eating, I would eat at Mary Mac’s Tea Room for dinner, Cracker Barrel for breakfast, and OLG restaurant.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my success to my grandfather Louis Nixon; without his support when I was younger, I do not know where I would have ended up. Also, I would like to give credit to my parents, Nathaniel and Beverly Nixon, and my children, Keeniel and Mia Weaver.
