We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrus Solomon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyrus, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
There’s no tangible method or measure of value. It all depends on how you treat what you do and what you create. Where you choose to place it, who you chose to celebrate and accommodate. It’s like a free market. It’s fun.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I don’t know what sets me apart from others. Everyone’s different and that’s what excites me the most about the art world. I guess I can say I play my artistry like an instrument or a symphony. There’s an ample amount of moving parts to what I do and I maintain the poise of it so well. Sometimes I’m surprised at myself. Consistency got me to where I am today professionally. Has it been easy? No. But I make it look easy. I overcome challenges by maintaining my own rhythm and staying in my own lane. I’ve learned that if you want something to happen you have to become the first version of it. I want the world to know that if they couldn’t see me or my art I’d still be somewhere on the planet doing it lol.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in downtown Memphis so I’d probably take them to Central Station Hotel to have coffee at Bishop or watch the train come in and check out some vinyl. Or I’d bring them to Arrive and lounge at Hustle & Dough to catch up on business. Probably take them to meet Ericka at Stock&Belle where I’m an in house model or Tops Gallery to see some of Mr. Luther Hampton’s sculptures. We’d eat at SOB or Slider Inn or get Rumba Lunch. It’s many things to do here. I’d definitely let them meet my mentor Mr. Jay at Jay Elton Gallery as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my mother agency Watermarx along with my family of art brothers based in Ghana.
