We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrus Riley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyrus, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Building business relationships, creating generational wealth, working for myself and leaving a lasting impact on those I work with.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My photography is an unrestricted view of timeless moments captured through my lens in an interpretation of visual imagery. Being a visual artist I ensure that my client’s vision is realized from start to finish. I gather my client’s details then begin to create the scenes and walk them through my photographic vision which will ultimately deliver their desired results. I’m proud of how I take each of my clients on a visual experience and I encourage them to enjoy the moment and have fun. My goal is to meet in-person or via video with my clients to talk through their session and gauge their energy. This allows me to establish a comfort level with them and they with me. I map out the entire session so that everyone knows what to expect. I enjoy capturing my clients’ personalities which lends itself to great imagery. This process sounds simple enough, but it took years of trial and error to perfect the ideal formula that works for my business. It was challenging, yet rewarding. If I had to do things again I would definitely not operate in a silo and sought mentorship earlier in my business. Also, I would be more willing to receive help earlier in the process. Today, I’m proud of where I am in my photography business.  Photos are timeless if done right.  In 5, 10, 20 years from now, if you did your job right then the client will forever remember that experience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta has a number of great places to visit. The City is an important part of the Civil Rights Movement. The Atlanta History Center chronicles the city’s past and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site is dedicated to the African-American leader’s life and times. Downtown Atlanta encompasses Centennial Olympic Park (built for the 1996 Olympics), the Georgia Aquarium, the Atlanta Zoo, the World of Coca-Cola, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights to name a few of the great destinations. There are many amazing places to eat such as Nan’s which I particularly enjoy since I like Thai and Hibachi/Japanese Cuisine. Other good places to eat are Fogo de Chao, McCormick and Schmidt, Capital City Grille, and Maggianos. There will soon be another restaurant on the scene called the B Spot opening this December. I plan to check it out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Angel, my children, and extended family who supported me and encouraged me to strive for greatness—to always do everything in excellence when maneuvering throughouh life. My mother Rosa Lee Hines-Riley, instilled the drive that continues to motivate me to this day. There are so many that have inspired me along my journey, but I will shout out a few creatives: Toni Shaw is a fabulous photographer and fine arts painter that has the skills to capture a ballerina midair and create a scene as if it is fairytale. Ayana Vellissia Jackson, an American photographer and filmmaker, who attempts to uncover the identity of the black woman. She is a true artist and history maker. The dearly departed Ayesha Lakes who was an amazing photographer and creator whose vision and imagery will be missed. Michelle Walker, Greg Wright, Carl Johnson, my SPC Photography Guild partners really impressed me with their style of photography and their ability to communicate exactly what you need to get the best out of your photography and make it mean something. The Atlanta Photography Guild has also been a judgement free space that allows creators to gain inspiration and skills from the ongoing opportunities they give their members. I’ve spent many hours working with other like-minded individuals gaining important insight.
