We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyra Grayson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyra, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Quitting my day job was a tough choice. Which I probaly shouldn’t have quit, because quitting has its pros and its cons. But it gave me a sense of independence. Having an entrepreneurial mindset is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made because it strengthened me mentally and motivated me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I do Graphic Design, Photography and Videography. I feel like what sets me apart from others is the fact that I’ve never given up. I weigh out all the options and think of alternate routes before I just give up on a project or shooting an artist. My proudest moment was shooting my first celebrity, who happened to be Moneybagg Yo, and actually working with Quality Control Music and it’s affiliates on different projects because working with record labels in any type of way, is never easy. Nothing is ever easy, so this wasn’t an easy thing to do, and up to this day, still isn’t easy. Being featured in The New York Weekly and NBC Affiliate stations have also been a stepping stone as well as being in my local newspaper – The Birmingham Times. I’m not near where I wanna be, but I feel like if I keep going, a breakthrough will happen eventually. I struggle with anxiety, so the pressure of that, college, and other things, weigh down on me so what I do to overcome these challenges, are staying In the Word of God, meditating, and spending time with friends and family outside of creating. I’ve learned to always keep creating and go all in, no mater what. What I want the world to know about this brand and it’s story is that, I will always take risks, if it means feeding me and my family, then I’m all for it. I want people to know that art is a field/place of healing. Create in any form of art that you would like, as long as it makes you happy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Birmingham, AL, my favorite spots for site seeing, would be Vulcan Park, The Rotary Trail downtown near Railroad Park, Alabama Splash Adventure Palisades Park Watch Tower (Located in Cleveland, Alabama). My favorite eateries would be TopGolf (which is also fun all around, golfing, eating, playing pool, etc) Buffalo Wild Wings, Waffle House, and Mizu Japanese Steakhouse which is a must have! To have a drink or two would be Woolworth, Birmingham Daiquiris, etc. It’s so many places but these are just a few personal favorites.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
-First and foremost, my grandad. Hes the one that got me into the world of photography before he passed away. He wanted me to learn a camera he was no longer using. I wish he was here now , so I can teach him the settings he was trying to learn. My whole family and their support is always appreciated. -Secondly, my inspiration, Kobe Bryant. I fell in love with the game of basketball long before I knew design and photography was even a form of art. Knowing the game, from the squeak of the sneakers on the court, the ball bouncing, down to how your mentality works in the game and in your daily life, is something I will hold to forever. Basketball was and will always be my main life lesson. Thirdly, my friends and my boyfriend. They are always supportive of my career. My friends, they know who they are, have been one of the reasons why my platform has pushed so hard and I’m even at this point. Even the friends who I photographed when I first started doing this, to see how much I’ve progressed is amazing. Shoutout to my best friends for being apart of this process and still are in different ways.
