We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyra Brady and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyra, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been a creative person and never saw myself with a traditional 9-5 job. When I dropped out of college I didn’t know what direction to go. After a friend suggested becoming a hair stylist I never looked back. I loved how inspiring the environment of a salon was and how furthering my education in the hair industry allowed me to travel and network with some of the top stylist in the country. I love creating beautiful things and this career allows me to make wearable art everyday!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think what sets Craft salon apart is our approach to creating looks for our clients. So many times in our industry I feel like stylist get stuck in doing the same thing on everyone because it’s a look they’re good at. Now the trends have changed and clients are looking for you to create a vibe or aesthetic that feels more unique to the them. We love to create looks that you may see on your favorite celebrity, tailored to you.

Getting to where we are now as a business took a lot of mistakes. Doing hair was the easy part but actually getting a grip on the not so glamorous side of owning a business was difficult. We didn’t always know exactly what we were doing but we always tried to improve with each mistake. One of the biggest lessons we learned was just reaching out and asking for help. Whether it be asking investors for financial bolstering or inquiring from other salon owners on their approach to running a successful salon. Each bit helped us find our own footing and aided us on the path to success.

I want the world to know that doing hair is more than just cut & color. Being a stylist is a truly transformative career that can change the world by making people feel beautiful and confident. I am so passionate about what I do and creating the best experience for all of my clients.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to go to dinner! It’s my fav pastime so I would go to:

Talat Market in Grant Park
JenChan’s Supper Club in Cabbage Town
The Lucian wine and bookstore in Buckhead
Clermont Lounge/Tiny Lou’s for food & drinks then the roof for views or dancing if you’re into that!
Ruby Chow’s, everything on the menu is AHMAZING
Lazy Betty – expensive but worth it!
Herban Fix in Midtown – great for vegetarians and vegans (still good if you’re not)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor, best friend, and now salon co-owner, Joshua Sepnieski, has been a pivotal part of my growth as person and as a stylist. He saw something in me when I began as his assistant, and invested in me in so numerous ways. He has constantly pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me everything he knows so that I am prepared for anything that comes my way. He always provides a wealth of knowledge and makes sure we, as a team, are consistently taking classes and improving our craft.
