We had the good fortune of connecting with Tylur Starks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tylur, why did you pursue a creative career?
From a very young age I’ve always known that I wanted to sing. I spent hours listening to the likes of Selena Quintanilla Perez, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and Janis Joplin. These were the many influences that inspired me to sing and pursue my calling. I have a true passion for writing songs that are heartfelt and that tell a story like, Mary J. Blige (I’m going down and My Life), Etta James (All I could do was cry, At Last) and Aretha Franklin (Ain’t No Way). These songs and these artist laid the blueprint for the type of vocal musician and songwriter that I’ve always wanted to be. In my pursuit of this career I attended Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. Then I made my way to Houston, San Antonio and then Austin, TX singing and recording through out the state. Now back in Columbus, OH I am releasing my fourth single on July 30th titled “Safe Place”. So why did I choose to pursue a career as an artistic creative? Because this is exactly what I am meant to do.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The one thing that really sets me apart from other artist is my songwriting. I truly enjoy laying out the story in my songs, I want you to feel and visualize everything that I’m saying when you listen to my music. My new single which will be released on July 30th 2021 is titled ”Safe Place” it really tells the story of what happens when you don’t feel appreciated and you feel as though your being placed to the side by someone that you love, I’m very proud of my new single. I feel as though I’ve gotten to where I am today by staying true and consistent to what I love and what I’m purpose is, Which is singing and performing and constantly working on my craft, whether that be in songwriting or with live performances. I am a completely different performer today than I was 10 years ago and that all comes practicing and learning from my mistakes that I make on stage. None of this marathon has been easy. I’ve been singing and performing for 20 years and there have been challenges every step of the way but all of those challenges have made me a better person, musician, artist and business woman. As far as what I did to overcome those challenges I prayed A LOT!!! and I’ve tried to find and understand the lesson in every single challenge that I have had to face. I’ve learned so many lesson being in the world of music and trying to break into the industry but the greatest lesson I feel I have learned is to always pay attention to the people around and the conversations that are going on around you. People will always tell you their true intensions you just have to listen. I want the world to know that I will never stop reaching for my dreams in wanting to provide sincere heartfelt music and to encourage people to go after anything that their heart desires.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friend to have brunch with live music at the Royce (black owned) and get an order of their Red Velvet Pancakes. Then show her around the Short North with a day of shopping at small local businesses. Followed by grabbing margaritas at El Vaquero along with fajita. Then maybe the next day take a tour of downtown Columbus, OH and view all of the beautiful street art. Grab a late lunch at the Rooftop Lincoln Social, I don’t know about you but the roasted Brussel sprouts are to die for. Then later that evening we would go to The Savoy to the open mic jam session with the Amazing!! Legend Band or enjoy the popular Sang and Hang which is audience participated live music and as far as having the a drink at The Savoy the Henny Punch is a must have. Or maybe have an evening of live jazz at the Blue Note Cafe (black owned.
