We had the good fortune of connecting with Tylia Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tylia, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal as an Author is to bring more awareness to Cerebral palsy through the stories that I have written and show people that there’s a positive side to living with this condition.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born with cerebral palsy I only weighed 2 lbs. 3 oz. doctors told my mother I wouldn’t make it past 24 hours but here I am 25 years later sharing my story as an author and advocate. Through the many obstacles, I’ve had to overcome the one that sticks out to me the most is learning how to type on an old fashion typewriter due to my Cerebral palsy and lack of mobility I have always had terrible handwriting so in kindergarten I had to learn how to use an old fashion typewriter in order to write my ABC’s and I absolutely hated it As each time I would touch the keyboard in my fingers would be so much pain due to my swan neck deformity And I would become very angry and very frustrated about my condition but little did I know that one day that same typewriter that I hated would become the tool I needed to share my story with the world and how I Bring awareness to cerebral palsy. What I learned from this obstacle that I overcame is that sometimes you got to do things you don’t want to do in order for you to become successful in the long run. What I would want people to know about me is that I do not let my obstacles define who I am and who I could be I just take it and strive to be the best writer I could be in after all they say obstacles make the best chapters in a book
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would have to say my favorite places to hang out are Waterfront Park and Disney Springs, Margaritaville, Universal studios, and lastly, My favorite restaurant of all time Cracker Barrel know I love me some biscuits and gravy
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shout-out to my mother Lissette Flores-Aponte who has been my biggest support system throughout my journey with Cerebral palsy. I also want to give a shout out to my stepdad Carlos Aponte Jr. for being my source of inspiration and guidance, being the parent who stepped up.
